Turning around in a private cul-de-sac...

My girlfriend lives opposite a T-junction in a close with a cul-de-sac at each end. Beacause she only has a driveway for one car, I have to park on the road. No problem there but I do use one of the cul-de-sacs to turn around in. However, having done this for nearly a year I've suddenly just had a middle aged gentleman come and stand 12" from my face, tell me that the cul-de-sac is private (I didn't know this, there are no signs) and to immediately stop turning around in it. Ordinarily, I'd be fine to adhere to any polite request but he was very confrontational and aggressive. When I told him he was in my face, he said "if I was in your face, you'd know about it". It turns out he's an ex policeman...

Threatening behaviour aside, is it against the law for me to turn around in a 'private cul de sac' with absolutely no signs up? Does anyone know the law on this? I feel like I want to keep doing it because of his lousy, stinky attitude. :x

I'd report him to the police. Not just from the point of view of getting back at him, but also in case it escalates in some way then its on record he is the aggressor

BTW don't just think because he is ex old bill he'll have contacts. Quite often its the opposite and they like getting one over on each other, especially if they are from another area ie the Met or something.

So if its a private road, he and the other residents who use it maintain it themselves, and not at the public expense?

Yes, as above, check with the police to see if you are doing wrong in turning there and mention this aggressive person.

Some people seem to take ownership of areas of public space as if it's theirs...

I'd just call the local council and ask if it's an unadapted private road with restricted access or a normal public road.

Thanks for the advice so far. I'm still seething at this guys attitude. How dare he threaten me like that. The problem is, I told him to f*ck off so I don't feel like I can report him as I reacted aggressively to his confrontational style.

The only facts I know are that the residents of the cul-de-sac all pay towards upkeep (according to him) as it's block paved. I'll be contacting the council and builder on Mon to clarify. Also, it's not the Zed I'm parking but my beater - a VW Polo. I doubt jealousy is a factor! T

It should say 'unadopted' on the street name sign, or be marked 'private', otherwise he can feck right off. As others have said, make a polite enquiry with the local police as to the legal situation, and report his aggressive behaviour. Then if it escalates you have already made them aware. Well done for backing down and not nutting him though. I would have - being a short arse it is so tempting as most people's noses are just the right height for maximum impact / minimum effort

:fuelfire: burn his house down then he will have to move out for at least 6 months

No seriously are you committed to your girlfriend why cause bother to your self plenty more fish in the sea

i'll get my coat :tumbleweed:

+1 - a simple phone call will let you know the legal status. You're then prepared and know your ground if he has another go.

Part of my cul de sac is block paved, some of it private (pink blocks) and some public (grey) so the surface means nothing.

Forget police ( unless reporting the threats) builders, etc., the council is who you need. I know as my road/cul de sac was unadopted and as residents we turned it over to the council to maintain and adopt as the residents would have had to foot the bill for upkeep and we knew it would need resurfacing soon enough.

Mine is the same, my section with three houses is private, but there are no signs

What I'd like to know is if the road is private, does there have to be a sign? This guys stinky attitude makes me want to exploit any legal loophole possible.
