Turkey ...

Went on honeymoon last August to an amazing resort in Side- the staff were wonderful people and I've never known anyone work as hard as they do to please their tourists. Sad as this is now another no go country, which will cripple their economy leaving extremists with the opportunity to blame the west. Sad, sad times.
 
That was already going that way as Russia had more or less banned tourists going there after Turkey shot that plane down.
 
Was very shocked at the events last night - now feel sad, I only finished working in Istanbul in June - most there are lovely people, really enjoyed my time in the city. Sadly, Erdogan will probably now use this to eliminate any dissent from his Presidency and program of further restrictions.
 
Slightly off topic but connected has anyone else watched the Sky1 doc with Ross Kemp Fight Against Isis ?
Watched it earlier on catch up , gives a really good account of what's happened /currently happening Re Turkey /Syria/Iraq :cry:

Yes. He risked his neck there big time? Felt sorry for the commander who jokingly stated he'd now had enough of his own religion. Woman abducted, kids poisened, absolutely brutal regime. Scumbags all of them.
 
This won't blow over anytime soon. Watch this space for another coup....and another and another if neccessary until he is toast.
 
Quick intro.....

Turkey is a fairly new democracy, founded in the 1980's. Originally it was established by Ataturk as a secular, western facing democracy, with the separation of Church and State. Edogan (the current President) was elected Prime Minister about 10 years ago, and proceeded to introduce reforms that restrict civil liberties and bring Islamic laws into general practice. This has been going on now for 10 years, with Edogan being re-elected this year on a base of fear and terrorism (sound familiar?) - there is suspicion that the resumption in Kurdish attacks in the last couple of years was manipulated by Edogan to gain further power. There is also a school of thought that the latest coup was a "Reichstag Fire" arrangement by Edogan or his supporters. Regardless, Edogan will now use the coup to pass further restrictive laws, eliminate (or at minimum reduce the effectiveness of) the political opposition, and establish his own people in the judiciary and military. Basically, Turkey is on the path to become a one-party state, with a dictatorial flavour, that is less western-friendly and plays only lip-service to democracy.

And they are our best Middle-East ally :cry:
 
Oh, and one other point. Edogan has never had complete control of the Judiciary or Military. He removed a number of senior military persons a few years back, mainly Navy - claiming they were going to establish a coup - and promoted his own guys in. The latest attempted coup means he can now gain control of the three elements that run Turkey - Judiciary, Military and Government.

And who is the nutter in the EU that is pushing the agenda to get Turkey added to the single market?
 
Been visiting Turkey for the last 30 years and watched it develop from something "basic" to something well and truly approaching a European standard. Truly wonderful people who it would seem are about to be ruined. I'm sure Mustafa Kemal Atatürk would turn in his grave as all his good work unravels.

Summs it up way better than I ever could. It means all the influx of immigrants EU made a deal with get a passport in Turkey and Edogen get their loyal votes. Drowning out the voices of westernised Muslims in the country. In ten years or sooner we will have another big mess to go and sort out right on our bleeding doorsteps?? And as someone mentioned earlier our governments are supporting this madness. Glad we're out of EU.
 
I think Turkey is many years away from Eu membership - even more after the attempted coup d'etat

Too right Ronk they were on about the death penalty being brought back in earlier today. What scares me is you can see the chaos that lies ahead. When will it ever end?

I think it's only going to get worse - and much more so !
 
I have been going nearly every year since the mid 90s and I'm going back to Olu Deniz in a few weeks. After not being able to go back to Eqypt this year, I'll drive to Turkey if I have to.
