Tuning Garage Recommendations

Hi all,

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good tuning garage? I’ve seen a lot of plug in tuning devices but I think a custom tune will prolong the engines health?

Any advice would be great, ideally around the West Midlands, Birmingham/Worcester area? Also is a £250 budget enough?

Cheers

There is a guy up here in Sunderland but perhaps thats too far for you? One of our respected members travels from Scotland which shows how good they are.

Performance Torque on the outskirts of Wolverhampton did some remapping work on my E89 20i some years ago. They do bespoke maps using a rolling road system. I had some hardware installed too so not sure how much a basic remap would cost but no issues with the work done and would recommend.

Sorry but I don't believe that any RR 'facility' are able to do 'bespoke' maps.
The files for a remap for the N20 were written by someone (presumably Superchips) many years ago. The licence to use these files were then sold off to anyone who paid them the money for the rights.
I seriously doubt whether these files would be able to be 'manipulated' by all and sundry.
The ONLY thing I believe you can gain from using a 'tuner with a Rolling Road' is a print out of of what the files have achieved to your car.
I don't believe that your average 'rolling road' establishment are software experts, which would be needed to manipulate the files (if they CAN be manipulated).
The only thing the RR people can manipulate is their RR. So, maybe their 'bespoke figures' are from the RR, not the data from the car?

If you get a bloke in a van to come to your house with the remap files for around £300, I do not believe that paying double for taking your car to a RR for them to upload the same files gives you any benefit (apart from an A4 bit of paper).

I may be wrong, but I need convincing! :)

Going on your statement of engine health as opposed to performance gains, if you’re able take the plugs out to see how they look, you can tell a lot by their colour, if they’re the right colour and you haven’t any concerns or doubts as to the cars performance, no problems you can think of, it’s had regular oil changes, then personally I don’t see any need to throw £££ at something that’s running very well. Unless you want more grunt and are happy to pay for that then if it ain’t broke….. :driving:

Sorry Ponders, you’re correct when you say that a dyno rolling road cannot deliver a bespoke remap, my lazy response to the OP. The dyno was used to clarify the outputs of the remap. In my case the car was run on the dyno 4 or 5 times.

I spoke to Will who owns Performance Torque to clarify if he could provide a custom map that focussed on improving driveabilty and not necessarily on maximum BHP. Will wrote is own tuning files for the N20 so had the capability to provide a custom map as he was able to manipulate the tuning file data.

As you say most tuners just download a generic map to the car with no ability to manipulate the data and create a custom remap.
