Tuning 20i

We're hoping to have our 20i upgrade available in March. We're looking at 245hp and 345Nm torque with a 3 year warranty (from new) on the engine and drivetrain as usual, but final figures will be released on completion of our development.

That'll be interesting... I keep wondering about a remap on my 35i, not too many places offer the warranty to back them up though. Its alright spending £500 for a local chap to do this, and then bang you're left with a £40K garden ornament.

Do you do stand alone upgrades, or are they just as part of the ACS versions of the cars?

I'm in. Where do I sign?

Any ideas on price yet
thanks

I notice the OP hasn't posted since Jan 1st, has his engine blown up I wonder?

Probably around the £2.5k mark including the 3 year warranty. Maybe a bit less.

Still 'IN' on this bobby? :)

Doesn't seem a bad price to me. Provides virtually identical hp/torque figures to the 28i and instead of paying £4,385 more you only pay £2,500 and still maintain a warranty of 3 years (albeit with a non-OEM provider). I suppose it depends on whether or not in the real world you can negotiate the premium between 28i and 20i down.

But how reliable is the warranty? ie will they wriggle out of it, or will BMW wriggle out of other things because of this?

When I bought mine, the difference was slightly more than £4k as they would not do quite the same deal on the two. Either way, I felt pained spending £4k on what I knew was just electronics that could be re-programmed for considerably less in due course.

So considerably less is what I would be willing to pay. Is £2.5k considerably less? Well not enough for me. Especially as I am sure I have seen other ACS tuning charged at significantly (£700?) less than that. It looks good and I am willing to pay real money, but there may have to be some pencil sharpening on that figure. Especially considering Kevin's questions above.

Its not just electronics... the basic engine is the same, but some components are upgraded. How else can they get circa 280bhp from the 28i but circa 240 from the 20i on a remap... think about it... :) Longevity and reliability are just as important as the power. For that reason BMW upgraded components on the more powerful engine. There's a list somewhere, turbos, injectors, can't recall now.

Do you seriously think BMW GB would have taken on AC Schnitzer as its official tuning brand and sold it through its dealer network for 10+ years if the warranty was no good?

The warranty is not an issue. Never has been. The stuff is properly researched, well built, thoroughly tested on numerous cars and on the rare occasion that there is a problem (which can arise on any engine, tuned or not) ACS Germany pay up for repairs at your main dealer. No problem. It's not worth our while to do it any other way, especially as the majority of our performance upgrades go on brand new cars.

The price might end up cheaper on release, but I've based my estimate on the 28i upgrade price. Our 116i upgrade is cheaper, so it might end up somewhere between the two.

Now where's me pencil sharpener...
