Tuning 20i

Serious question : when you do this to your car, what will you tell your insurance company?

Ask your insurer what mods they want to know about. Some want to know everything, others are only interested in performance enhancing mods. You don't want to give them any chance to not pay in the event of a claim...

Tapatalking...

I normally notify them of the mods, they don't normally make much difference to the cost, however I'm old with lots for years no claims.

Hi all

Finally, I have a Supersprint system going on next week, centre pipe and rear box, also a TMC Tuning Box.

I will post results once I have them.

Hi All

Happy new year

Yesterday I collected my Z for Sanspeed after having the Supersprint exhaust and TMC Box fitted.

Firstly exhaust, I have replaced only the pipe from the middle silencer box to the back box and the back box itself. Sound wise, so far, it sounds a whole lot better. Not to loud but just enough, pops and burbles now. I'll try and do a video soon of the car standard and with the Supersprint exhaust.

TMC Tuning box.
Very simple fit, just two connections into the wire loom, so a 2 min job to fit and remove. Massive improvement in performance, if feels a completely different car. The Dyno Dynamics rolling road measured, Standard 178hp, Tuned 223BHP, and Standard Torque 250 ftlb, Tuned 310 ftLB

As its so easy to fit its just a simple case of removing it when it goes into the dealer!

So far very happy, going to go for a New Years Day sunny roof down blast today to have a good listen

I will confirm costs with Sanspeed later this week and post them up if anyone else is interested.

Cheers

Gavin

Sounds good, I remember I spoke to my BMW dealer about fitting an Eisenmann back box to my MINI Cooper S and getting a remap as it was still under warranty. They were ok about the exhaust but gave a no no on a remap. As Maniac suggests I would enquire with the company what back up they give or warranty should you get component failure. Some tuners will cover this. For me it's not an easy case of unplugging it and putting back to standard if something should fail. If say the turbo blew you can bet BMW will look as to why and what caused it. If they get a whiff its been tuned then kiss goodbye to your warranty. I think you might get away with say fitting the smart top module but an engine or gearbox failure not so sure.

Not wishing to put down any remap but something to be aware of as potentially big bills with no warranty.

Tim.

The chipping kit sounds really interesting. I can't see how it would stress things anymore than the 2.8

Is is possible to buy the things yourself and fit them or does it have to be do e by Sanspeed?

Surely 223bhp won't cause any issues as BMW just turn the wick up on the sDrive 28i anyway and get more power than this? The rest of the mechanicals are identical to the sDrive 20i aren't they?

I believe part numbers for the injectors and turbo are different. Presumably to take the extra strain. From what I've heard anyhow...

Looks like a good performance hike

however, may I ask why you have spent a few grand on upgrading the 20 sdrive and why not just have spent the extra on a 28 sdrive? which has more power and you are not running the risk of invalidating the warranty.

Not a criticism just interested in the rationale

just what i was thinking.

I dont think he has spent thousands. There is quite a price difference between the 2.0 and 2.8.

I have just picked up a 2.0, 5 month old ex demonstrator with 1500 miles on the clock from a main dealers for £21500. I could not get a 2.8 for anywhere near that cash.

i would imagine those mods to cost about 1k, i think 28i's are more like 5k + over the price of 20i's.... if not, more

I really can see the appeal of the remap. You save a load of cash buying a 2.0 over a 2.8 then spend a few quid on a remap and get virtually the same performance. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Other than it can invalidate your warranty... so if the engine, gearbox, brakes or suspension go bang, you have to pay for the 'bmw priced' repairs.

Ah but if I was not bothered about a warranty my car would be going nowhere near a stealers.

Plus I get the impression the kit used to map the 2.0 can be quickly removed. So if there was an issues with the suspension then it could be taken off and who would know.

If the insurance company suspect any jiggery pokery they will wash their hands of a claim - They could go after you for the third party costs as well. I assume you wont be telling them you have an extra lump of bhp and torque?

Modified exhausts might give them a bit of clue and they might start digging!

You may be ok to remove the kit after a car park nudge - but if you have something a bit more energetic?????

The list price for a 2.8i is £4,165.00 more than the 2.0i - so after discounts would be about £3,700.00 I would think.
For that sort of cash you'd be crazy to buy the 2.0i and tune it, unless you got a great deal on an older one! :scratchhead:
