The USB is the control for the track skipping etc it's directly connected to the head unit.

I do have another option......

Thanks for the offer , i currently have it use the phone to skip tracks anyhow as I’ve got my iPhone connected through the aux input so wouldn’t be any different to my current setup,I’ll pass on this occasion for anyone else’s interested it might be better for them.
Ideally I’d like to be able to use the steering controls to skip tracks without touching the phone ,don’t really know what else is suitable

In that case you have a couple of options;

Buy an echo Dot and connect it to your car's AUX input. You get auto-connect/wireless connection and then voice control which will be better than the voice pick-up of your phone. Still no steering wheel control though, but at around £50 not a bad option to upgrade to a smart car sound system.

Or you could go down the head unit replacement. Prices vary depending on what you already have, but if you just have the base Professional head unit, no USB and no Bluetooth and only 6 speakers then it could cost you around £300 and that would give you 8 speakers plus USB and Bluetooth hands-free calling, then you'd have the option of installing something like the Tune2Air that'll give you steering wheel control.

I do have a JVC head unit which has bluetooth so may well go down that route, guess i will only need to purchase the correct harness adaptor which may render the steering wheel controls oboslete anyway?
I have the 6 speaker system so makes it easier i think
