Tuesday morning question. What is this?

Its the light sensor for the dash. If you put your hand over it during the day your will notice the dash display dim after a little bit.

This ....

Put you finger over ot and watch the cluster lights change

I am sure this must be the auto lights sensor. But have no real idea...

I thought this - but a) it's a weird place to have it and b) I'm pretty sure the auto light sensor is in front of the rear view mirror.

And it never lights up.

Isn't the one near the mirror the one that auto-dims the mirrors when you're getting dazzled from the car behind?

That is the little clear plastic rectangle on the bottom edge of the mirror surround right ?

Thanks for that - I'll try it later, although in daylight you can barely tell the dash is lit anyway. Presumably it will work the other way round if I shine a torch on it when it's dark outside?!?

Yup, that's the one - roadster mirrors are a different shape, guess that's why the sensor is different.

Nope, that changes the brightness of the lights in the instrument cluster. Apparently. Unless I really have not been paying attention :?

Oh right. My dash lights only change when the auto-lights come on, so I assumed it was linked. I've a manual control for dash lighting too.

I usually have everything set to minimal lighting as I prefer to be the only bright thing in the car when I'm driving quickly at night

haha yes I did the same it made the little lcd go dimmer.... I thought it was doing this as there was a problem!

The same here - I had wanted to have the dimming light fixed, but now I understand the higher engineering behind it!

could it be a photo detector for dimming the instrument light when dark and/or making them brighter when there is daylight...If not why not ??

That is correct Sir, its a light sensor which adapts the power of instrument cluster lights. If you put your finger on it, the speedos etc will go into 'night mode'

Me too! Most noticeable on the mileage display, it dimmed significantly when the sensor was covered. And that's regardless of lights, or auto lights, being switched on.
