TT conversion

hey guys I currently drive a 2000 Audi TT 225 coupé...no mods so completely standard. I was wondering what the z4s are like in comparison of speed, ride height etc. Is the 225 as quick as the 3.0i or quicker? I'm 19 and currently pay £1000 for my ins. fully comp, do you think a z4 will be more??

Only one way to find out - autotrader will tell you the bhp output of both, weight of both, confused.com will tell you your quotes.

Good luck.

I think the Z4 has more bhp, around 240, I'm sure one of the other members will confirm?

Also the 4wd of your TT won't make it any quicker but it will be better in the snow, I drove my friends 225TT and it rolled quite a bit around the corners , I think the Z4 will be more planted .

I have a 3.0se (2003) and a friend has the 3.2 TT (2004)

We have had a few sprints on (quite roads) and even with his launch control he cannot pull away, in fact he / we thinks the Z4 has the edge on his TT

265bhp for the 3litre N52

Have you watched the 5th gear video comparison on the two?

Having owned a mk1 225 many moons back I would say the Z in the dry is def quicker... Not so turbo torquey but a more linear power delivery.

In the wet the Quattro on the TT would give it the edge in a traffic light gran prix.

When you get into 3 figure speeds the TT wouldn't stand a chance.

But the TT prob has a more compliance comfy ride over a Z4... Especially one still on rft's

Had a 225 TT a while ago and think my 3.0 se is quicker from memory. the TT was a fun car but not grinned so much with my Z4 since I had my 1969 Mk 2 Cooper S with a 1/2 race tuned engine!

yh but they are facts not actual opinion. it says the 3.0i is quicker but without a turbo or 4wd i dont see how :)

Never driven a TT, but before I had my Z I had a Focus ST3, 2.5 litre turbo, 221 bhp, 0-60 in 6.6 seconds. WRT 4WD, not sure that necessarily makes a car quicker, or better at putting power down from 0 :? However, you suffer from 1 serious disadvantage - turbo lag. My ST had virtually none, but it was still there at the start, and every time I changed gear. I'd guess your TT comes with some lag too ? The Focus, whilst quick, was untidy and inelegant compared to the Z4s 6 cylinders of naturally aspirated engineering genius that delivers huge torque from stationary, and just keeps going with no need to take a breath. I have a 3.0 Si, post-2006, with 265bhp and it destroys the Focus utterly. My brother drove it this weekend - his normal car is a seriously quickened Fiat Coupe 20v turbo, and he couldn't believe how good it felt.

Tell you what though, you should not spend too long debating theory and opinions on here without experiencing it first hand - drive one and find out for yourself

I did a test drive in a TT in early 2003 and 2 days later I test drove a 3.0i Z4 and the Z4 seem much quicker and had a much better feel to it. About a week later I purchased my first Z4.

A couple of things I didn't like with the TT convertible were the exposed roof frame (no lining)

Also the cabin feels too spacious, but not in a good way - the Z4 cabin fits around the driver, whereas the TT doesn't, with that doesn't feel like your in a sports car.

I had a 225 TT coupe before my ///M. When it wasn't being fixed (again and again) by Audi, it was pretty quick in a straight line. When you get used to where the turbo picks up, it's possible to keep it spinning without too much effort.
However, the handling was just awful, wallowing in the corners and the brakes useless. I've not driven any zed apart from the ///M, but from what I've read (here and in formal reviews), the zed in sport spec handles pretty well. The 0-60 of the 3.0 zed should be a second or more less than the TT, and I would expect the zed to be quicker in most circumstances. You can switch off the traction control in the zed too, something you can't do fully in the TT.
Your best bet is to test drive one.

Lastly, in the TT there's a little hose that runs to the engine management system that feeds back how much boost is being provided by the turbo. Mine accidently came off from time to time, making the turbo run at full boost. It's bloody noisy, but the additional power is amusing in short bursts :P

I had a 225 coupe many years ago, MASSIVE turbo lag and poor handling seen me sell it after 3 months (at a profit). No way they are in the same league as the 3.0 Z! :driving:

my tt was massively modded i bought a 3.0 si and was dissappointed the tt would have killed it , admittedly it had skn remap , kn3 full suspension upgrade , mkn exhaust , sn3 turbo chip , brembo gt upgrade brakes big kit , but to be honest its not all about how fast even though i broke the bank to get an M i bought the tt because it was pretty , after 5 yrs of modding , always thought the Z looked pretty bought one , missed the power bought an M now best of both worlds apart from in the snow or ice my tt with a upgrade on the haldex as tt,s are not full 4wd did feel better , its an audi con calling it a quattro only real quattro are a6 , a8 full torson system , buy a Z !

And here i was hoping that someone was considering a twin turbo conversion on a Z4. Misleading title!

Z4 3.0 will be quicker that the TT 225. I have gone head to head with an Audi S3 (first model) which, if I'm right, shared the 1.8 225bhp engine with the TT. Not much in it, but the zed was quicker

can only echo the comments already stated above.

at the time the 225 felt quick to me but had annoying turbo lag. felt like I was never quite part of the car, just like I was passenger without much feeling..z feels totally different and actually felt like I am part of the car when driving it - hard to describe when telling friends this but its so true. 225 also felt nowhere near as planted as the z4 whilst cornering.

hope this helps

IIRC the S3 had the smaller turbo as found in the single exhaust 180bhp TT, so the Zed should be way faster than that (assuming the S3 was standard and the sail on top of your Zed wasn't causing too much drag :poke: :poke: )

There will be NOTHING in it - all down to the driver. My mate has a 1.8T 225 quattro and it was marginally quicker than an E46 330Ci (same 231ps engine as the pre-facelift Z4s such as mine). I'd imagine with the Z4 being slightly lighter than the E46 that it'd balance things out.

Either way, the Z4 is more than quick enough. And - in standard state at least - the Z4 will be more fun to drive. The TT can be massively tweaked to improve things, plus remapping can make it quicker easier than tuning a Z4, but for thrills the Z4 should be better than a TT.

And good effort on insurance at £1k at 19 on a 225 TT
