TT 180 or 225

I had a 225 coupe when I was 20 and it was s**t for what I wanted. Not a sports car at all. The question is ; do I get my missis a TT knowing they are s**t but I can make sure I get to work (30 miles) and leave her to walk to work (1 mile)? She currenly has a street ka so can't get any worse! I am leaning towards YES so I can keep the Z

My 225TT was the most unreliable car I've ever owned. I experienced all of the known faults, as well as some which are unacceptable for a modern car. These included the cam belt failing at 80-90K miles (the handbook said it should be renewed at 120K miles), and a gear selector fork breaking - both massively expensive. Fortunately I had a warranty as more was spent on repairs during my five years of ownership than was spent on the intial purchase! Oh, and the brakes were pathetic and the handling characterised by understeer with added understeer!
I really, strongly recommend buying anything else!!

I think for examples going for £5k they are worth a look.

Cambelt is recommended 80k or 5 years. Audi reprinted the books wrong and copied the 120km from the European manual without converting to miles. I know of a few that went once over 5 yrs. Agree on not the most reliable and handling/performance is dull as standard. Liked mine on KW Coilovers.

Trouble is, they converted the unit, so the handbook said 120,000 miles - the worst of all possible errors!

Could'nt fault my 180 Quattro in the 3yrs that i owned it, even though it was a Golf with a better body. Liked them then and still like them now it was the best car i owned before getting into the world of the Zed

+1000. my 225Coupe was also a massive unreliable pile of crap. no matter how cheap they are now, don't do it you will spend twice the cars value on repairs and parts !

i love my quattro sport 240.... Looks fab, and a GREAT daily snot box..... interior is truely gorgeous, still gets plenty of comments today, goes quite well but more importantly is flippin freakishly good in the bad weather....this is when that car really comes into its own, i love mine, very very pleased with her, MPG sucks though :-(

mine hasnt missed a beat in a years ownership, has a raft of mods including all the suspension, bushes, ect ect its handles OK, its not a sports car at all, it can be fun to hustle around i suppose in the right setting, stupendous fun in the snow, i'll be keeping mine for sure.

My 180 TT was unreliable, but in terms of how it drove I actually quite liked it... you're not gonna get it sideways around corners but it felt planted on the road. I always regretted not getting the 225 though, mainly because the rear looks more balanced with the twin pipes.

Failures I had were MAF sensor, coil packs and dashpod (and the heated seat seemed to burn through a bit over time, so you had the choice of "off" or "burn your arse off!"

Thanks for all the advice, took the mrs to look at one yesterday and she doesn't like them so thats that!

The main/only attraction for me was the 4 wheel drive but looks like I'll be doing the grim commute on public transport again this year!

Beedub- love the quattro sports for what they are, very rare!

I thought the consensus these days was that RWD with snow tyres was infinitely better than 4WD with summer tyres? So with that in mind, FWD with snow tyres should be perfect. These days Audi's predilection with "quattro" has far more to do with marketing than genuine gains in traction. Afterall in a TT most of the time it's not even engaged and you're just lugging around another 80kg.

TT was probabally as good in the snow on mid range summers (Falken 452s) than the Z4M was on winters.

You'll get around fine with either until the ground clearance stops you.

Had the 180 convertible. Not very quick but safe in ice/snow - this car suffered with worn front wishbone joints "creaking" - required replacement joints and arms I think. Didn't suffer with the infamous "Dashpod" problem though. Then "inherited" father-in-laws 240Bhp coupe (the bi-colour one). No problem at all. Quite quick but pretty boring drive. Both cars were weekend cars. Now have 2004 3.0i Z4. Loads more fun!

Get a diesel TT if you can... my last 07 plate A3 TDi quattro never had any problems with any of the abuse hurled at it, including having it chipped. Haven't chipped the latest A3 quattro, but MASSIVE improvement is (a) in the reduction of understeer (b) engine power re-mapping in the 2011 models, much smoother across the range...
