Trouble turning over and backfiring - eeek!

Hi all, this is the first time I've used the car since October, after it had an oil change by BMW.
It's an 06 Z4M Coupe with 35,700 on the clock.
Anyways, I took it for a long drive and waiting for the engine to warm before any excess use of throttle. On the way home, I was on the red and managed to find a petrol station just in time. Once it was filled I turned it over and it wouldn't start, just kept turning and the occasional backfire.
Eventually managed to get it started, but acceleration in the lower gears felt iffy (not much power).
On returning home, I switched off the car, opened the garage and started the car up to put it away - same issues with turnover, but no backfire.
Dreading this could this be a vanos issue? :(
Any help would be much appreciated!

Just started the car and it started straight away, no issues. I’ve got it on a trickle charger, so I’ll keep an eye on it!

Hopefully all good now then.

Having said that I'd never subject my MC to E10 fuel as it is only 95 RON. BMW recommend minimum of 98 RON whenever possible so mine always gets E5, usually Tesco Momentum 99 RON.

You might find it runs better on the good stuff!

Can I just say that when I saw the title of this I thought it was something to do with my wife.
She has exactly the same issues every night in bed when she turns over. :D

I hope she doesn't know your password for the forum

Hope so, I'll give it another blast tomorrow. I'll do a few high revs to get rid of the E10 and get back to the good stuff then! 👍

😂🤣😂 Hopefully keeps the bed warm though!

If you ran it very low on fuel might it not be dirt from the bottom of the fuel tank in the filter. I was always told not to let it get too low due to this. When it sits for a while it settles again.

That is a very good point, thanks 👍
It has started ok since, but I’ll leave it for a few days and see if there’s any issues.
As a rule of thumb I always make sure there’s at least a quarter of a tank, but struggled to find petrol station yesterday.
Hopefully won’t be any long term damage!
