Tripod users - ball & socket or pan/tilt

As per the subject really. If you've got a tripod what type of head do you have on it, which do you prefer and why? Am busy deciding, I like the freedom of the ball & socket ones for speedy composition but my experience of them is they tend not to lock in place as well. My table tripod occasionally moves under the weight of the telephoto lens if fully zoomed.

Be nice Paza3 :poke:

I just bought my first ballhead. The ball head seems to hold the camera just fine. It's a little fiddly as it is a one knob model. And one needs to make sure and hold the camera before undoing the lock knob. Something one doesn't worry about with a panhead. I would prefer one with dual knobs that will let you lock the camera but still pan. but I can up grade the head later. A pan head is probably a little more intuitive to use. but tends to be bulkier. I will be headed to Scotland for a weeks holiday in April. That will be my first intensive use of my camera and tripod setup. I tend to use a tripod a lot. As I like to bracket and combine in an HDR program. For now I like the ballhead as it packs down more compactly. And doesn't hang up up on things when on your backpack and moving about.

Cheers

Pan and tilt.... I use them all the time, some of the people I shoot with use the ball type on their spotting scopes and I HATE them.....( we spot for each other and use their scopes,,,...impossible to pan down a line and keep it on the mark.). Crap....crap..crap.. Oh, did I say I'm not partial to them. I'm not !

Maybe I'm just old and used to normal tripod heads......yeah, that must be it, but I still don't like them :D

I guess it depends what you're doing, both seem to have their fans on various web searches I've done. The only bit of advice I've seen that is consistent is people always say spend more money than you have!

I have a manfrotto ball head and I love it... These guys also do some nice tripod and heads:

I find the ball head is fantastic for very rapid repositioning but not so good for panning (i.e. video)
