Trip to Australia

OK so I have to go to Melbourne and then Sydney for 10 days on business. Nature of my job is I won't be working too hard, bar a series of meetings around the cities.

Looks like I'm based in the Shangri-La in Sydney, but frankly no idea about Aus, aside what I'll read in guide books on the 25 hour flight.

Fly out on Monday and have just 3 days in Melbourne then 7 in Sydney, so is there anything I must see or do?

Yeah, ask the folks there if they know my cousin Michelle in Perth.... :P

(why do people do that ? Ask people about someone thousands of miles away or in a city of a million people ??? It boggles the mind..)

Have fun, and stay sober...yeah right !

Yeah - yeah folks do that, but I'm just interested in a few of the must do's foa part of the world I've never been near.
Walking to the top of the Sydney Bridge is the sort of thing I'd fancy

I went over in March, I liked Melbourne more than Sydney tbh!
Sydney:
Manley beach (jelly fish restaurant is top)
The Rocks
Cafe Sydney (stunning view/food) need to book well in advance though
Taronga zoo (amazing setting)
Fish market (supposed to be pretty good)
Surf lesson

Melbourne
Cherry tree bar for live music, on acdc lane
Great ocean rd (if ur in to driving its a must, would b amazing in a z)
Little side streets are pretty cool, v european.
12 apostles which r along the grt ocean rd
Philip island where u can watch penguins wander up beach at sunset.
Saint Kilder
Sports museum (supposed to have some fun interractive stuff)

One point for oz is dont speed, the cops do not let you off!

Just remember it's winter here. I was in Melbourne on Tuesday and it was freezing cold in the evening (bring some sort of jacket).

- it could be that i've been in Queensland too long and therefore anything below 20 deg is cold though...In 8)

Melbourne, -keep an eye out for the 'Melbourne Star' (like the London Eye). You will see it from a cab when coming from the airport. One of Victoria's big embarassments - It stared to fall apart, to the had to dismantle (partly) in now looks like a 'broken star'

- also : use cash not card when paying for taxis (certainly in Melb) - big skimming scams going at present. You could easily find a couple of extra taxi journeys on your monthly bill).

Don't forget to ask when entering the country :

1. Do I still need a criminal record?
2. I have a case full of Fruit and veg, - is that ok? :D

Enjoy!

Have a great time, but shall I send over my CV, it sounds like your line of work would suit me down to the ground, and my boss tells me I am expert at "not working too hard"?!

Shangri la is great hotel great location, stayed there in April. Getting a wee bit colder in Sydney just now rained when we were there too.
We did the bridge walk, went out on a fast rib boat, but mostly ate and drank lots :D
Loads of good pubs round about you
We also went up to the blue mountains for a couple of days, stunning scenery.

Embed not working

I was in MEL last year for a couple of days before heading to SIN on business.
I stayed at the Royce hotel http://www.roycehotels.com.au/which was fantastic and only a short tram away from downtown.
I checked out an aussie rules game which was brilliant fun!

Lovin' it thanks. I've been skimmed in worse countries than Aus. Try paying with a car in El Salvador....

Still can't understand the stupidity of me leaving the UK and our relative long days and 'Spring/Summer' to fly 25 hours to Winter...

Guys - so much great info, links and photo's there - OK so it's work, but I'm looking forward to it now  25 hour flight albeit business class - way less so

Glad my pa has found me a hotel with cool views in the Shangri-La

Flights not too bad, who you flying with? We were BA then Quantas (purely for points and cost) normally fly emirates but they were far too expensive in comparison. (not that you care if business) :)
We went via Hong Kong though and stayed there for 2 nights on the way out 8)
Flights back were Adelaide to Sydney, Sydney to bangkok, bangkok to heathrow, heathrow to glasgow all in one stint only stopping for refuel or plane change.
Now that was a wee bit long
Say hi to Bendyem if she is still there

Zed five - for sure it's still there. Down the end of Little Hay Lane and about a mile from me in Shenstone. I prefer the Fox & Hounds in the village these days.
Look forward to seeing you around Sutton then
