Tried my lift out today..

Ok, so after it sitting on the floor in it's box for the best part of the week, I decided that today was the day to get the Zed on it..

Got a good deal on it, they were advertised on Ebay for £1,200 odd plus £160 for next day delivery (ouch) but then it does weigh 450kg...

Got my neighbour to pick it up, he paid and the price was £1,100.

Unboxed it and fitted the castors to move it around, it moves surprisingly easy with them on it, although you can't lift a car with them on it, they are purely for moving it around. You can also hook the lug on the power pack trolley under the front to move it, but it is cumbersome if the castors aren't fitted.

As my car has M Sport suspension, it was VERY close to the ramp, so I decided to grab a couple of scaffold planks to run it on to, and the Zed will now be parked on them over the lift in the garage.

So....

Nice and snug, can still get the door up and down, that's 2 "clicks" of the safety lock short of fully extended, about another 200mm to go. It's not as close as it looks to the screen and bonnet, camera angle makes it look much closer.

Lowered it down to a nice height to do the rear hubupper and lower bushes as I've had them for a few weeks but not gotten round to it.. Bloody Euro had sent me the inners, FFS....

Ah well, left it up there and came to work in the van.

I am impressed though, it is VERY sturdy.

Can you get to the parts of the exhaust you need to without anything been in the way, looks a nice piece of kit

Yes m8, there is a centre section that goes from side to side, but it's only about 200 wide. I reckon I could easily remove the whole system, just by making sure I pace the car correctly over the lift before raising it.

ok Mike, so officially I have garage envy now, stop bragging about the lovely toys coming your way recently :P

A roller door and a modification to your roof joists (if that's the right word) and you could get some proper height out of that ramp.

Great bit of kit

Mike - What's the maximum height of the lift? And it looks like it's marked up your garage floor. Is that normal?

Cheers

Max lift is 1200mm plus whatever size lifting pad you use. You get 4 of each from lie to high, the highest being about 250mm so 1450mm max.

I marked the floor dragging it around.

I am actually sat underneath the rear of the car now on my little stool, comfy as hell doing the rear bushes with no stretching or leaning.

Very cool - looks like a good solution for the slightly, err, "compact" double garages we seem to have in this country.

Quite a lot of force going through those front rollers, though, right? Wouldn't be surprised if you start getting little channels in the concrete floor - might be worth putting some stainless sheeting down or something like that.

Haha, now I am jealous! Did my rear bushes and drop links with the car on axle stands, and my neck is still aching a week later!

I think that's the next gift to myself !

Did you ever consider a 2 post car lift? My mechanic for the wife's car got one for around £1k when he setup on his own, and its going strong 18 months on. Its another option, and appreciate they take up more space, but would they offer greater stability/access?

Cheers

Nice bit of kit Mike, must make lifer so much easier working at the height. What safety features does it have, does it have a locking mechanism or is it just the rams holding the weight?

It has a locking arm between the two rams, that ratchets out as it raises. You go past the height you want, and then lower it onto the lock. I just let it touch onto the locking pawl, leaving pressure in the rams too - Belt & braces.

No point, the lift only goes to 1200mm, so no extra headroom needed.

Two poster would be in the way ALL of the time, whereas I can park the Zed over this. Also, not enough height for a two poster, and it would make getting in and out of the Zed a right pain if it was always parked between the posts.

Here's a pic from underneath, If I used the 100m lift pads, there would be plenty of room to get the whole exhaust off..
