Tricked up MX 5s. Is it just me or do they want to race everyone?

I got shouted at by a wino who was sat on a bench in Henley as we drove past, he called me baldy. I had to laugh as anyone who knows me, also knows I have loads of hair :hairdryer:

It's not just MX-5 drivers.

Anyone in any type of convertible (Yes 320 / 420d with the folding hardtop I'm looking at you) seem to think that as they have a newer car they have the upper hand in the Traffic Light Grand Prix.

Not a convertible but the funniest I had was a VW Fox or Lupo or some sort of teenage drivers VW at a set of traffic lights. Kept with him to 30 then put it into 2nd.

People Carrier drivers seem to be quite bad.
Ranger Rover Sport drivers.
White Van Man.
Hatchback, Saloon, Estate and Coupe versions of 118D, 120D, 320, 320D, 420D, 520D Drivers

Jesus! Where do you live SANTA POD?
But I know what you mean. The blue and white roundel with the roof down and all walks want a pop. Jealousy is a strange and bizzare partner.

I am surprised at some of the comments on this thread. As usual when drivers criticise other drivers, their comments are 'in their head' not necessarily based on reality. Someone even mentioned preferring a 'proper sports car.' A 'proper sports car' is a Porsche 911 or Cayman. Settle down. :D

Souped up beetle really, proper sports car

I don't think it specifc z4 thing- I even get tail-gated in my oldman Honda Civic in OAP beige/grey!

Back in the day, I used to bite ( 145mph up the arse of an S2000) when I had a modded Impreza but now I am older and wiser ( and a big ban behind me!) I let them get on with it- well maybe flooring it to 80 ish from 50mph if they've been tail gating- just to show if they want t play the c**t- they can have it back!

But, mostly I drive sedately, and, people are probably thinking, "whats he driving a car like that, slowly"

You cant win!!

As I said, it is all in your head! Other drivers are more likely thinking, "I fancy a curry tonight."

I have a Eunos Roadster(MX5), I find it’s the other way around, everyone and I mean everyone seems to be antagonised by an MX5, I’ll just be pottering about, and there’ll suddenly be someone trying to get in my boot, and that’s with it looking OEM+ classic and not Yoof drift style JDM yo :headbang:

Could be old Doris, the local Chav, angry Zafira man, obnoxious Van man or mother of 5 Chantelle.

It’s pretty annoying to be honest and why it’s turning more track focussed, roll on the Turbo.

Here is my wee beauty with my much missed T5 that the Z4C replaced.

I think the MX5 is a fun little car. You see a lot of them on track days with the drivers beaming, whilst not exactly tearing up the tarmac they always seem to be having fun. It is the ones with the big bore exhausts, huge rear wings and massively wide tyres that make me roll my eyes  All that extra noise, drag and weight..........but each to their own.

Love my Z4, but appreciate it isn't the fastest car on the road, but it is as near as I can get to "a proper sports car" on my limited budget. TBH only ever had positive comments on it, but mine is a coupe, so other drivers can't see the hairdryer on the passenger seat. :poke:

I've not had that problem with MX5s to be fair - it's more the grumpy dad's in Scenics, Zafiras, Qashqais, etc. that seem to think they've got a rocketship.

But that's probably because they fall for the marketing hype - the S in SUV doesn't stand for Sport, it stands for Sh*te!

Haha, I was going to say the same thing. Had more Citroen Picassos try to outdrag me than anything else. I wonder why people can't read the big chrome "3.0" written down the side of my car. Reminds me of that scene from Snatch with Vinnie Jones and the Desert Eagle.

Actually drove an MX-5 for the first time last weekend - my mate just bought one. A mk4 1.5 litre with the folding hardtop, so probably the least appealing model to most enthusiasts. It was actually a really nice drive. Just felt like a good honest fun car. Took him out in the Zed afterwards, and I'm ashamed to say that my steering felt shite. Our gearshift is much nicer though (I have a ZHP). Obviously it felt like a rocket ship too :driving:

Some old moron in a C-max even shouted out ''hairdresser'' as I drove past him

A former colleague of mine used to own an Audi R8, which attracted some negative attention from some fellow in a white van - hurling all sorts of abuse at him. He just replied with "Yeh? Well you're the one in a Transit!" as he blasted off into the distance. Makes me chuckle every time I think of his story :)

brilliant little cars, with some turbo or s/c power they are the real deal!
Darn straight.

I used to have a Mk1 Eunos 1.8 with a TorSen differential, special B-Spec Mazdaspeed supercharged from the factory. It lacked legroom with the half cage but the supercharger whine beats turbo hiss any day for me.

My convertible career started in a mk2 1.8 mx5, then a z3 2.8 and now the z4 3.0. All good cars but all different in their own way. The mx5 was a hoot to drive (especially at lower speeds round bends, it gave the impression that you were going faster than you really where, which I enjoyed), nice and light, very responsive handling and bullet proof. Unfortunately it was not rust proof and had to go. The z3 and z4 are heavier cars, more powerful, feel sturdier built but not as chuckable as the mx5 was. I am happy with the z4 for now, gorgeous looks, addictive 3litre engine and the noise that goes with it and areal presence on the road but, I will always remember the mx5 with good memories. It was awesome.

I feel a car kind of tells you how it wants to be driven, the mx5 was rev the nuts off me and find some corners to chuck me into. I dont feel that with the z4, with that I like to blast it down the straights and take the corners a little easier.

I probably havent driven the z4 as hard as I did the MX5, to me it feels like it doesn't want chucked around, not that its a bad thing.

Either that or I am driving it wrong, which could also be very true :D

Never had an mx5 try it on. Never seen a quick one either. They are simply a nice gentle way to have fun.
It's not the regular let's have fun on a dry day crew.
It's idiots with spots and big egos!!
Similar to the ST brigade with fiestas. They even wanted a drag race against my old RS6.
Heyho
Now that I would have paid good money to laugh at.

I literally had a ST Fiesta once pull up at lights, ...must add it was all popping and banging tuned to hell and back with lots of stickers....who gave it the full beans on light change I let him go then floored the old beast. Caught up, help speed, then accelerated again. It was hilarious. What was really funny was at the next set of lights after waiting for a while for him to get there, he just coasted behind me.
Maybe no badges on the old girl helped?
But if ya know ya lumps of metal, it is an unmistakable rear end
Kids eh?

Look up V8 conversions, plenty in the States, bigger faster but still,,,,,,,,,,, not quite

think you're missing the point of the mx5.

Drive one, properly on b roads, tight twisty country lanes and you'll see what they're about.

My girlfreind has a 2.0. I drive regularly because she likes lunch with her wine. So I do know the DIFFERENCE

I'm not saying you don't know the difference, I'm saying you don't know what they're designed to do.
