Tread Wear question

Hey folks, looking for some advice so here's the story...

Bought my baby 4 weeks ago now with 12 months fresh MOT. The fronts didn't seem too bad when I saw it but knew they would need changing by summer proper.
However...I went to get the balancing checked and when I head back to collect it I find out that the fronts are both illegal!
Details are..
Inner Centre Outer
NSF - 0mm 2mm 1mm
OSF - 1mm 3mm 1mm

I then even noticed that the inner edge on the near side was showing canvas!

I've done 1600 miles since I bought it, mostly motorway and not had much chance to throw her around with the weather we've had.

So the question I'm asking is... Can the fronts have gone from legal to illegal in this short a time frame or are the garage issuing the MOT guilty of passing tyres that were not legal?

I know the centre depths are fine but canvas doesn't show all of a sudden and I strongly suspect that they ignored it.
I have spoke to the dealer and he stated that when he sent it for the MOT he told them to replace what needed replacing. I believe him on this as he asked them to change the rears and they didn't at first, only when I mentioned it again when picking it up did they get it done.

Thanks for reading.

I keep a close eye on pressures as a rule and check before every long journey. I'm normally a little OCD about tyres and pressures etc but it was much easier to keep an eye on tread with my last car so have obviously been a little lax on this. On the other hand, after you'd been told 2 tyres have been changed and a fresh MOT, I didn't think for a minute that 3 weeks later I'd be looking at 2 dangerous tyres!

Don't see how they could go from legal to canvas showing in 1600 miles so something not right

Are you on RF's ? if so there were some Bridgie's posted up here yesterday on 5mm for £80 the pair

I'm on RFs at the moment. Mrs D is a solicitor so she has thrown the sales of goods act thingamajigger at the dealer and so we hope to get him to pay for a full new set or at least a fair portion towards it.
If he gives us cash towards then I'll be getting non-RFs and a sealant kit.
Any recommendations for tyres?
Looking at Michelin Pilot Sport 3s at the moment. Had these on my Celica GT4 (pushing 330bhp after much fettling) and they were brilliant in wet and dry. Not keen on Toyos and no experience on Bridgestones. Had Conti Sport Contacts before and they rocked in the dry but were horrible in the wet.
