Right you seasoned travellers, I have a dilemma or question to pose.

Mrs M and I are talking a pre Christmas shopping trip in early Dec. Have done it a number of times and always go to New York. We both love the city, requirements are nice food and drink and good shopping (always have managed a good exchange rate). But got to thinking are there alternatives to consider?
Any thoughts on Hong Kong? Other recommendations welcome.

Chicago is much nicer than NY. HK is great, but a long way to go. Very different shopping too.

Well, a little closer to home is Bruges. A fantastic, historical, horse drawn place with good hotels and excellent food. Plenty of shops and I suspect a Christmas market as well that time of year. But mind out, the market square is cobbled, mind yer footing.

Chicago is great we think better than NY how about Singapore now that is somewhere different and spend the evenings in Raffles hotel drinking Singapore slings.

DR-Z, Sprint, thanks for the Chicago suggestion, looks good and cheaper hotels. Singapore is a good call, will take a look

DumfriesDik, thanks for the suggestion, but it work in Ghent regularly so don't want to spend my downtime in Belgium

budfox, I can imagine it's quite expensive?

Thanks for the suggestions so far

How about a pre christmas cruise.Cunard have a couple to Amsterdam and Oslo and a transatlantic on the QM2.Good jewellers and art gallery on board for christmas presents, plus the usual run of the mill stocking fillers.

Have a peek at Gdansk - really!
Great food, historical city and cheap
It's a Tri city, Gdynia, Sopot & Gdansk
Sopot is in the middle 5 star hotel there (about 15 mins away on train) £75 per night

Yes the Sopot Grande (an old - refurbished - victorian hotel) is where Hitler hung out for a while. Great hotel. But despite the cheap food and drink, not really much good for shopping.

The windy city? Hope you don't freeze to death there :D

NY is still top of my list though, I have been to the other places and they are all fine - but that is just it, just fine - not extra special.

pvr, I agree, been to NY a lot and love it, but wondered if we were missing out on somewhere else. Chicago maybe, or maybe we just go back to where we know. :D

Wouldn't say Chicago is nicer then NY but is a little less in your face both great places ,
As for Hong Kong total mad place it's go go go 24/7 lots to see and do but you will need a very fat wallet to
Enjoy everything money is king for the Chinese .

I'd have said NYC, but I'm thinking about Las Vegas for December this year. - for the same reasons, I just fancy a change from NYC. Plus, Vegas will be warm :D

But warm and Christmas do not match.

Although with your Aussie adventure it is not strange for you :D

If it is shopping you want nothing beats the states. Therefore my suggeston, as an alternative to NY, would be Florida.
Plus I think Florida in some places don't charge tax!!
