transport mode

can anybody give me a rough idea how much would the dealer charge to reset the z from a transport mode? and is der any alternate way to do so rather than gooing back to dealer and pay a fortune which i expected??

OP, if it is transport mode I would say for free, as it shouldn't be once delivered?

If it's reset itself somehow by accident, maybe they would try and charge for about 30 mins labour....so £35-£80 depending on the dealer (?)

What is transport mode? Is it something used when the car is in cargo container?

BMWs are not shipped in containers, they go on roll on / roll off ferries. So they are driven by dock staff onto and off the ship, and onto and off the trucks / trains. Transport mode is apparently a setting BMW use for shipping that restricts throttle response and turns off some functions (air con, stereo, sunroof, etc). Used in combination with transport blocks on the springs. However people seem to report conflicting stories on what does and doesn't work in 'transport mode'.

It may be "Transmission lock" and can occur if electrical power fails etc. It would be wise to read the manual...

I spotted it in the E89 manual on my first read....something to do with towing the car. It's on the same page(pg.49, E89 without iDrive) as Launch Control :D

You need the little allen key from the massive tool kit supplied with the car....

if it's not that then "Off to the Dealer" for a freebie....

Look in the manual, not sure what page in any other model.

Looks pretty easy to me...

Spooky,

Both myself and another member had this last week!!!

Its called Transit Mode or mine was and thanks to this site i didnt worry too much, Dealer had it for the day just in case but it was the Transit mode and just needed resetting. For some reason Z4's do it when the battery gets too low or drained.

I would guess 30mins min charge really they should do it while your there.

Good luck

one last chance before i forking out over 150 pounds for an hour labour with the stealer!!!
a riend of mine have the INPA software and cable which can connect to the z! but is there any instruction you can reset this mode urself?

Right!!!!!

Done it again, my own fault i had been busy and not use the Z4 then went away and went to start it up and the dreaded clicking!

It wasnt dead but nearly and since charging its back in transit mode. As above i would be keen to reset it myself.

Im going to ring the dealers in the next few days and ask if there is a way or if i have to pop in can they just plug it and and away i go.

Stupid fooking electronics.....

Cheers

Update,

Had the Transit Mode turned off again at the Dealers. I was getting a very strange engine searching sound at start up too kind of like an exhaust blowing but not. Anyway it seems like the transit mode was cuasing that as it wasnt doing it on the way home.

Thought it might be a some use to make a note of it..

Cheers

I've just acquired BMW INPA software (see my thread) for the total sum of £27 for software/cable on ebay, plus £50 on an old XP laptop to get it to run. I'm planning on playing around with it tonight and will have a hunt to see any mention of Transit Mode and whether it can do it.

Thought it might be a useful solution if you keep on being charged by the dealer for this...

Hi,

Sounds good ill have a look at your thread.

I have extended warrenty anyway but i think they did it for free as it was in for a service.

Thanks

Well, sp3ctre and me seemed to have some success last night - he managed to turn his off with no re-illumination, but mine came straight back on but I think that's due to me not having identified and fixed the source of the fault yet.

I fully expect that once I have identified/fixed it, that I'll be able to turn off the airbag light with this software without a problem :)

I've just had mine switched out of transport mode following long term storage last year. The engine performed normally but I lost heated rear window, air con and the heater fan only ran on dead slow.....all fixed now but do you think the dealer could explain what it was about? Five clueless service clerks on duty in BMW Oxford, no wonder our bloody bills are so high!

How did you get it out of transport mode bud? Mine seems to be in it after a battery swap!

It needs to be coded via the OBD.

While I don't think it can be done using Carly, here is a link to people on here who have it:- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=97818

Some of them have other diagnostic software as well so one of them may be able to help you.

Failing that it's a visit to BMW or a BMW specialist.

Ideally you want to get Transport Mode deleted, not just reset or it could happen again. :(

I am in Stockport, just bought a Z4 and the battery has gone flat and its gone into transport mode. Anyone local able to help?!
