Transmission upgrade

So I’ve had my 2.2l E85 for a while now and I absolutely love it. The only thing I’d like is another gear... does anyone know if this has been done ie swapping a 6 speed in from a 2.5si etc. Or has no one ever bothered because of something I have completely overlooked?

Any thoughts appreciated

Cost and effort wise it would be easier to sell and buy a face lift car or a 3.0 Z4

That being said if you live your own car couldn’t part with it. Then there is no reason why not. The rear axel and engine architecture (bolt pattern) should be the same. 6 speed box might be longer so you may need the gearbox and prop shaft.

I am sure it could all be made to work. And I would think it’s a case of just swapping parts. For the correct bits. Look on realoem and compaire part numbers from your car to a 3.0l.

But sometimes with jobs like this. You just won’t know the problems until you have them.

Sell and buy a 3.0l

It’s cheaper and you won’t regret it.

If you had an E30 and wanted to do a conversion then I could understand your wishes.

Good luck

I asked the same question recently... https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=108450

Decided to leave it for now because of the unknown needs in addition to prop shaft (3 inches shorter), gear selector, gearbox support bracket etc.

Use the links in the other thread to check out how ratios compare between the two boxes. My 2.5 was ok, not sure about 2.2

It seems nobody has done it, so as Machine Monkey says - you won't know the problems til you get them.
