Transmission Options - E85 3.0i

Looking at buying a pre facelift version of the above and keen to get a view on the transmission options from those in the know.

I'm tending away from the manual option and considering automatic but can't decide between the SMG or Steptronic option.

Does anyone have first hand experience of the auto boxes that could steer me in right direction - thanks in advance

From what I have read the SMG is bad news...the auto is a bit of a slush box compared to later 8 speed boxes so will be slower through the gears than a manual..I’m not an expert on E85 powertrains..

Thanks will aim to avoid the SMG option.

The SMG is a very early unit and not related to the SMG unit in the M3.

I'm not saying that's bad, but don't confuse the two.

Personally I'd say manual.

Hi manual all the way! An auto Z4 kind of defeats the point of a Z4 it’s a performance sports car, well in 3.0 engine and above form.

The SMG isn't an automatic gearbox at all. SMG means Sequential Manual Gearbox, it is the same 6 speed manual Getrag GS6S37BZ box found in ALL 3 litre and //M models throughout the production life of the E85/86. The SMG even has a 'normal' clutch. However, there is no clutch pedal and instead of pushing in the clutch with your foot and moving the gearstick to select gears you simply push/pull the steering wheel paddles or gearstick and then an electro-hydraulic system actuates the clutch and selects the next gear sequentially up or down. You can select a fully automatic mode also but I never use this on mine as it's quite tardy and goes way up the revs before changing up a gear.
I would say that on the whole those on the forum that have SMG really like it, enjoy it and speak very highly of it, myself included; and those that have no experience of it tend to berate or belittle it

From Honest John

A Sport button in all versions crisps up the response from the accelerator pedal, as well as adding a little more weight to the steering feel. An SMG (sequential manual gearbox) automated manual transmission is an option in the Z4 but frankly is best avoided, so choose the standard auto if you don’t fancy a standard manual ’box.

Car and Driver

It didn't take anyone here more than five minutes behind the wheel of this Z4 to begin squawking about the car's confounded gearbox. The SMG is basically a manual with an electrohydraulically actuated clutch and gearshifts. You shift gears by flipping small "paddles" mounted on the steering wheel or by jockeying the curious gearshift lever on the center console. There is also an automatic mode in which the transmission shifts gears on its own like a traditional automatic. The SMG is supposed to combine the sportiness of a manual gearbox with the convenience of an automatic. Nothing personal, but in our case we decided it failed miserably at both tasks.

Gearshifts were slow and awkward in either of the system's two modes (the M3 comes with a more sophisticated SMG with six shift programs). Activating the sport mode, which is supposed to shorten shift times, didn't help much. The clutch was slow to engage, and this led to lots of lurching and head wagging when shifting up through the gears. Although you could smooth the action with very carefully timed throttle modulation during shifts, many drivers whined that the SMG made it appear as if they were back in high school and just learning to drive a manual transmission.

Cold weather made the pauses between gear selections even longer, as if the gearbox couldn't make up its mind what to do. Several times drivers had to restart the Z4 to reset the SMG's computer so it could put itself in gear. Just figuring out what gear the transmission was in seemed like work. That was in large part because the digital display between the tach and speedometer gauges was difficult to see and discern. With the top down on a sunny day, the display was nearly invisible. The reflective and gentle Patrick Bedard seemed to go over the edge when he declaimed, "This is a dumb-ass transmission, with more slack in its response than the U.S. Postal Service." Word of these problems has apparently gotten around, because BMW says only six percent of buyers opt for the SMG.

It's also worth remembering the pre facelift auto is only a 5 speed
What's the issue with it only having 5 gears - just higher rev's and less efficient when cruising?
Better than the old 3 speed box of the 70's and with the sports button...it's an animal

I remember those 3 speed autos - they were terrible!

Thankfully I only had one, then a few 4 speed autos that were slightly better - probably why I've only ever bought manuals since then.

Hi guys as I stated I’m not a subject matter expert but when there was another flame war about DCT vs auto boxes I did some general reading about the various options for Z4s and stumbled across what look like quite a bit of issues and faults with the SMG boxes relative to the limited number compared to the DCT and autoboxes..

There was a web site which was 100% focused on SMG support and it was very damming about the first generation boxes..sadly I can’t re find it..

I know AlienZed has had a few issues with his SMG on one of his E85s..

If people are happy/enjoy their SMG boxes I’m not going to piss on their bonfires... :driving:

Mines a steptronic Pete, the other Z gearbox packed in at 100k, this newer 54 reg one gave me issues at 34k so its had a new gear selector unit £250 and a oil n filter change ,£300 ish ,hopefully this will cure it.
My indi said prob lack of use has caused it ,
So now im back in uk i intend giving her a good thrashing
