Tramlining

I've owned my z for just under a year and the steering has never felt what I would call safe, particularly at speed. Under braking the car seemed to pull to one side, it tramlined even at low speed and felt dangerous at around the speed limit 8) . I noticed a crashing sound when braking. This all got progressively worse over the last 11 months but much worse recently.

Reading similar posts on here regarding tyre pressures, run-flats and lollipops/bushes, I decided to bite the bullet and order new drop links, bushes and lollipops. My local mechanic quoted £100 to fit, which I thought was a fair price.

So I picked the car up this and went straight for a four-wheel alignment.

Just got back and wow, the difference is night and day. Everything feels tight, the front end feels sturdy and after a brief drive, the handling is awesome. On a road where it used to tramline, it now doesn't. It's like a new car for me as since I've owned the car I've had this problem. Apparently the ball joint was completely shot and also the bush on that side.

Makes me wonder how it passed the MOT last year as I've only covered 3000 miles since. Feel a bit stupid now for not sorting before as for approx £300 including the alignment, the car feels like a new car.

The front control arm, which is shaped like a large alloy boomerang, has three flexible joints. The lollipop is the rear bush on this control arm(the 2 other joints on this are ball joints). The bush, as standard a hard rubber one, is housed in an aluminium housing that bolts to the car, this is vaguely similar in shape to a flat round lollipop.

I had a similar problem with mine tramlining and replaced the rear wishbone bushes for poly bush's and it made a huge difference.
