Tramlining

Stuart Truman...If you have a 2003 or a 2004 Z, then most likely you will have "sticky steering" issues. I have and had a new column installed for free and it was out of warranty.

I have a BMW insurance warranty. Perhaps I should ask about it

+1 Mine was tram lining on non run flats. Tyre pressures were too high. 19" Alpina wheels

Im running 19's too, with bridgestone potenza's (non run flats) I get tramlining badly. I was recommended 33 front 36 rear! What do you run ??

Michelin Pilotsport running 2.3 bar front, 2.4 bar rear. 33.3 and 34.8

One thing I have noticed, is that he steering feels "sticky" sometimes. Almost like the power steering is paused until you move the wheel and there's a brief pause/stickiness before it wakes up

+1 on the pressures for 19" Alpina wheels, tyre sizes are: Front 8.5' x 19', 235/35ZR19, Rear 9.5' x 19', 265/30ZR19
Re the sticky steering Stuart, there are a number of threads on it on this forum - mine displayed some stickiness on one journey, read up on it, greased the junctions on the steering column, and all has been fine since.

tar Ewazix. Guys are telling me around 400 for the set for the Falken's. So we talking around the 800 mark for the michelin RF...wow

When my car was in for it's first health check after I bough it, I was quoted £750 by John Clarks BMW for 2 x 255/35/18 Michelin Pilot Sport :o

I chose 4 non fun flats and got them for less than £600

I have just bought my 3.0SI and it came with Yokohama Advan Sport Runflats, yes the ride is firm but not skitish, good feel on turn in for runflats. I prefer the stiffer wall of the tyre, have used Avon ZZ3 great grip/comfort but soft wall does not inspire immediate bite/confidence during cornering.

It is tough as each driver feels and wants different results.... but i like the Yoko Advan and the back up of runflats out here in the wilderness and lack off moby coverage... :driving:

Hi
New to the Forum, having recently bought a 2008 Z4

Reading with interest the posts around tramlining. It is the only disappointment I have with the car. I have RFTs all round, the rears I replaced last week.

I see the main comment is around tyre pressure and people are suggesting a lower pressure. OK - but being a bit naive, won't this cause excessive wear?

I will be replacing the fronts in about 3,000 miles so could do with some advice here

Cheers

Just had 2 continental contact RFT's fitted on front to match the new Continental''s on the rear - those of you who read my recent post will know I discovered the previous owner ( or someone ) had put a Bridgetone RF on one side and a Bridgestone non RF on the front axle - can't go very fast down here on IOW but did notice plenty of tramlining. The front tyres were worn on the inside as well . I also had all wheels realigned when they fitted the new ones - there is a considerable improvement with no apparent tramlining and a softer ride ( probably due to more rubber ! ) Also I have the original wheels that are 225x45x17 that might help. I still can't get my head round all the criticsm of RFT's - I find it hard to believe BMW have mass produced thousands of very expensive cars with such a " dangerous " flaw - whilst I understand the obsession of getting as big a wheel as you can get could it be this that is contributing to this problem - I have known many people who have owned BMW's and no one has ever mentioned this problem - or is it confined to Z$'s

zedx21 if your looking at ditching the rfts there's a set of vreds for sale in the buy and sell section if there not sold

Hi Guys
Just had Michelin RFs put on the front. WOW - great relief. Totally transformed the handling and suffering no tramlining now
