Tramlining

Hey guys,

I've had my zed now 6 months but have a niggly issue with it. When i'm driving on roads that aren't perfect, for example on a dual carriageway and i'm changing lanes, then the wheel will pull over to the left/right.

been bugging me for a while now, and I'm curious as to what it is! is this a known issue with z4's? done a bit of research on this and some have pointed towards the tyres. wonder if you guys could shed some light on this for me at all?

Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta

Both can be fitted to 18s and you'll get plenty change from £600. Some people have manage to get all 4 tyres for under £500. Shop around and you'll get a good deal :thumbsup:

The main culprit is the stifness of the side wall. Any low profile tire is prone to tramlining and the stiffer side walls of run flats make the problem even worse. Solution? How about a nice 205/60-16.

Could be true I guess... but when I switched from Bridgestone run flats to Michelin run flats, problem resolved. No more tramlining and no more harsh ride.
 
thanks for the feedback guys! i got bridgestone potenza's on mine (17) currently. Brand new tyres from when I bought the car from BMW.

You saying the Michelin Run flats are a load better than the Bridgestone?
 
Bin the RFT's ! I had the same problem & changed the tyres to Falken 452's totally changed the car for the better! Sell your tyres on eBay ! I think I paid £380 for 18inch.Camskill tyres

+1 Mine was tram lining on non run flats. Tyre pressures were too high. 19" Alpina wheels

Im running 19's too, with bridgestone potenza's (non run flats) I get tramlining badly. I was recommended 33 front 36 rear! What do you run ??

zedx21, Michelins are the choice if you want to stay with the run flats. If you want to "ditch" the run flats to non run flats, good luck, can't help you there.
 
ok thanks...bit of a dilmemna then here! anyone used both the michelin run flats and the falken 452's?? and if so which are the best. :)

My two-penneth on that one..... I fitted the Falkens which cured my epic tramlining and am very happy with them, I haven't had the Michelin runflats but would be shocked and disgusted if they were not at least a little more capable since they cost twice as much. In my experience Michelins produce top performing tyres at a price, however they tend to last a lot longer so that has to be factored in to the cost.

For the price non-RF Falkens, Goodyear Eagle F1A or Vredestans all have a good following on the Z4 and will be a HUGE improvement over your Bridgstones. Just depends if you are feeling flush enough for the Michelins?

Michelin Pilotsport running 2.3 bar front, 2.4 bar rear. 33.3 and 34.8

One thing I have noticed, is that he steering feels "sticky" sometimes. Almost like the power steering is paused until you move the wheel and there's a brief pause/stickiness before it wakes up

That doesnt seem a mile off from mine! Im sure the rears wont cause to much tramlining anyway! It sounds like you've got that common sticky steering column issue!
 
tar Ewazix. Guys are telling me around 400 for the set for the Falken's. So we talking around the 800 mark for the michelin RF...wow
 
Stuart Truman...If you have a 2003 or a 2004 Z, then most likely you will have "sticky steering" issues. I have and had a new column installed for free and it was out of warranty.
