Tramlining

Hi all, i recently changed the back tyres on my z, and since i changed them the car seems to tramline alot, i had a wheel alignment done but the problem of tramling is still there :( .
any advice on getting this sorted guys :? cheers :)

...and did you only change the rear ones? RFT's do tramline. I use RFT's and it's not a problem for me, I love them and know them well. Also, if you are running RFT's, they will tramline more as they reach the 'balding' point.

Mine tramlines as do a lot of cars with Low Profile tyres i am used to it as my last car did it but a lot worse.

I hope you're not getting the sticky stearing issue;

http://bimmer.roadfly.com/bmw/forums/e85/5246978-1.html

Mine had it which the dealer replaced the stearing column under warranty (£1500 cost otherwise). It took me 3 attempts to get them to do it though!

I've been told all Z4's before 2006 will suffer from it sooner or later so anyone buying from a non BMW dealer ask if this has been replaced already.

It's down to the electronic power stearing (EPS), some only get it when its hot etc, mine use to get it after about an hour or so of driving.

Good luck!

mines arn't runflat there just normal low profile tyres at the back but im not too sure on the front ones how could i be able to make sure if the front ones are run flat or not?

I think I have that... went on a long journey a month or two ago and on the latter stage the steering did feel "sticky". Does anyone know if this can be fixed outside of warranty, as surely it's a safety issue?

As someone else said, did you only replace 2 tires? The difference in the tread and if any are runflats will have a dramatic effect on the ride, and could make it tramline (well runflats particularly). I recently switched all 4 to falkon 452's (non runflat) and I barely even tramline.

Yeah BMW are buggers for admitting thier at fault for anything, even when they do cave they say they meant something else. I ended up changing all 4 tyres to Michelins (Non Run Flat) and thought I might as well do the wheels for a change costing £900 and still had the issue. So it was kind of mixed feelings when BMW said they had identified the problem several months down the line and then replaced the stearing column.

Oh, if you do have a stearing column changed, ask if it was test driven before taking it, I got 100 yards down the road and found the car vearing to the right, having to stear towards left to keep it in a straight line and the traction control was continuously kicking in as the car thought the wheel was being turned. Of course I took it straight back and complained, they told me a couple of days later the column hadn't been correctly lined up and apologised, dosen't matter that I could have been in an accident of course!!!

I had exactley the same problem when I changed the rears on mine, I changed from conti;s to bridgestones.

The problems got a lot worse as my fronts have worn, fortunatley I am about to get them changed out.

read the lettering along the outside tire wall shakz4, it will have 'rft' written along with the tire/wheel size. Always have all four tires the same brand.

As far as sticky steering goes: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1379&p=19696&hilit=sticky+steering#p19696

I know I know...I suck at computer stuff... , anyway, I have written up my whole ordeal regarding my experiences with this extremely dangerous problem on my way home from HC last year. Anyone needing paperwork regarding this issue can pm me with a request.

May sound like a stupid point... but are the tyres on the right way as they are directional? 2yrs ago I had the same tramlining query with my MR2 Roadster after having the alloys replaced under warranty and the garage checked the wheels and said all was fine. I put up with it until a friend pointed out the tryres were running in the wrong rotational direction.... a quick swap round an all was fine again!

Worth checking....

Ah yes, I remember now.... sorry if you did say in your post (although i didn't see it), was this a warranty repair or did they do it good-will? I do wonder (God forbid) if this problem put me into a tree whether there could be some case against BMW? (not that I'm contemplating it, of course)

if the fronts are RTF's and the rears are normal PS2's you will probably have a pi$$ poor handling car! i have heard of serious handling issues which have come about from this mixture. check the side wall of the front tyres and check.

also check the tyre pressure of all the tyres including the ones you have had installed.

finally last time i put a complete set of PS2's on (best tyre in the world in my opinion) they took neigh on 1,000 miles to bed in properly. down the lanes i could not thrash it without the DSC light comming on and the whole car feeling like it was just on the knife edge of adhesion.

here to help if you live near by you can swap you fronts for mine for a definative answer before spending more money (temporary ike)
