Really looking forward to seeing this next summer. Grew up with the originals and so far the trailers look to have captured the essence pretty well.

Looks spectacular, but what's the point? Just looks exactly the same as the Mel Gibson originals - Tina Turner will probably pop up in there somewhere... :D Getting a bit tired with Hollywood just re-hashing previous successes - unless they do something different with the storyline or the treatment (as with the Dark Knight films) it just smacks of cynicism and a lack of imagination....

The original movie came out 36 years ago so there's a completely new audience for it as well as us old farts who'll go and watch it then complain its
not as good as the original

Absolutely true of course... but when all the dust settles, they're never quite as good as the original. Anyone think of a remake that's better than the original? And please don't say The Italian Job!

The Italian Job, Gone in 60 minutes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory just to name a few of remakes that didn't work for me. :(

I'm going to be interested to see how the new actor deals with the role. I enjoyed the original, first couple of films so I'm ready for more of the same. . . but it will be on DVD.

:driving:

Supposedly Peter Jackson has a remake of The Dambusters in the pipeline. I've liked his Lord of the Rings stuff and he's apparently a big vintage aero buff, but I really can't see how anyone should try to remake it... Some films are just of their time and all the better for it.

Looking forward to this too, good actors and mad machinery, sure this cannot flop?
... or are we potentially looking at waterworld in the dessert!!!

... and don't say waterworld is a cult classic :P

Slightly biased as I've spent the last 15 years in the TV and movie business, but a few that spring to mind are...

- Godzilla
- Dawn of the Dead
- The Thing (1982)
- King Kong

IMO good remakes are there because the source material is cared enough about by previous generations who want to use the best post production, budget and [audience relevant] talent to engage in the cinema. Movies are made to provide two things; a varying degree of artistic, storytelling content; and cold, hard box office cash.

If the audience pays to go see these films then the formula is working for them and hopefully the results aren't too offensive to the previous generation or a slight on the original material.

You're completely right of course. There are many remakes that just stink! Alas they provide the bad name to the few that don't and the cycle continues. And don't forget, there have been older remakes for decades, not just in the last 10-15 years.

Me...I just like movies. Old, new, remade, good ones, crap ones, weird ones - doesn't matter really
