Trailer hitch and bike rack options

The reason I started looking at buying a Z4 was the fact that I’m a single guy and don’t need a back seat. Plus, there’s enough trunk space for 2 small suit cases and a garment bag…more than enough room for my business travel. So the decision to make a z4 my everyday driver depended on one last thing….the ability to carry my bicycle.

I race bikes competitively. So I’ve always had a bike with a roof rack to take my bikes to races. I found that there is an option for a trunk-based bicycle rack, but I was concerned about the paint. What I really wanted was a trailer hitch so I can use a hitch mounted bike rack. There are two main advantages using this option. First, it doesn’t touch the car so there’s no chance for paint damage. Second, a rear-bike placement versus rooftop, save a ton on gas mileage. I did some surfing on the web and to my disappointment, found no trailer hitch options for the Z4!

I know adding a trailer hitch to a z4 may be blasphemy to some of you, but I needed one. So I decided to call a local custom shop and tell them my problem. I was directed to a place called Rick’s Auto repair (608-442-1634) in Madison, WI where I live. They told me they’d be able to make a bolt on trailer hitch that will easily hold the 150 or so pounds needed to support the rack and bikes. Plus there would be no welding so removal would be easy and not leave a trace. What I got when they were done went way over my expectations! These guys did a fantastic job! Specifically, it was John who did the welding and he really took a straight forward task and turned it into a piece of art.

Since this was a huge issue for me and I absolutely need the trailer hitch, I wanted to share it with others. Here are a few pics. I can definitely send more pictures to anyone who asks.

Oh my! :o , that does look out of place. I've never seen that set-up on a Z. Could you just have bought an old mid-sized truck to tote your bike with? I saw a Z at HC Saturday with a hitch but of course it was'nt so bulky. I wish I would've taken pics of it now that I see yours. Of course, it wasn't for bikes but it looked to be the exact same set-up motorcycles use. I wonder though, the places where you take your bike, will your Z be able to take you there with respect to clearing humps, off-road type traveling? Good luck, let us know how the first run goes.

Interesting. I looked for a solution like this for a while as like you I am into my biking big time (mountain biking).

However, I found a suitable bike rack which does the job nicely and good for 100+++ mph. As for the paint, I use clear vinyl strips where the pads touch the paint, barely noticeable from more than a couple of feet away. I put the wheels in the boot along with my gear and just stick the frame on the back, that way it doesn't obscure the lights or number plate. Perfect solution and a hell of a lot cheaper.

mattholecko first welcome to the forum....
Seems like there might be some issues clearing humps and so forth. Please let us know how it works out... :driving:

I guess I forgot the most important pics...the ones with just the hitch and not the rack!...Afterall, that's the way the car is drive most of the time ;-) The great thing about the job they did was it didn't effect the clearance. The hitch is well hidden and out of the way...and not the lowest thing on the car! So going to bike races has been easy. Now I get to cruise with the top down and the bikes in tow. It only takes about a minute to reattach the bike rack so it's on and off in a jiffy!

Very nice solution. I was looking for something like this as well in the past. But I gave up biking for other reasons. So I gave up my search.

It was a steal at just around $250...maybe less. I honestly can't remember exactly but it was definitely under $300. They quoted me about $150 originally but thought it might take more. Then then they put way more time into it than planned. After seeing the amazing job they did, I was more than happy to pay the extra bit. Oh...and that's with parts too! (except for the receiver which I bought online for like 25 bucks. Then the bike rack cost me $450 ;-) But worth every penny as it's an amazing way to get to a remote area for some outdoor fun!

gwatson - did you use a saris bones? I have one from my old car but havent been biking since I got the Z4. Its a great rack but did every so slightly damage the paintwork - whats this clear vinyl tape you're talking about - sounds like sellotape/scotch tape but I assume its different?

No, but similar I guess.

Go into a sign maker (place that does car graphics and other signs) and ask for a roll of clear vinyl. You then just cut to size. Basically like a big see through sticker which will help protect the paintwork. Works very well. Same effect as having a big bit of sellotape but 500% better looking and thicker.

The trailer hitch actually isn't the lowest point on the car! I know...it's decieving from the photos. So I have zero clearance issues during driving or over speed humps. The only place it's an issue is backing out of my very steep drive. But, I always scrape my nose coming in and out. If I don't cut the wheel a bit, I'll scrape the trailer hitch too. But the front spoiler ALWAYS scrapes ..the hitch just sometimes. So it's not the lowest part. At least it's the hitch and not the rear spoiler taking the abuse! So if you're not scraping now, you won't scrape with this configuration.

I also had a custom hitch made. Instead of horizontal, the receiver is vertical so it's hidden. Also, I can tow a trailer of up to 1,000lbs which I use to haul my motorcycle, tires, lumber, trees, and rocks! The bike rack fits two bikes and the trunk can still be opened. It makes the car much more practical for me.

Very nice set up! Love the recessed idea! Sometimes it amazes me that no matter how hard I search for something on the web I never find it. I search for months trying to find a trailer hitch option before I even bought my Z4...and never came across your post The dealership was even trying to find me some options with no luck. Funny how that goes.

How did you determine the towing capacity? Originally we were going to do the one attachement point and estimate about a 500lb capacity. With the 3 attachments that they ended up doing, I was told "I wouldn't have any worries." But I don't have any specific numbers. While I don't own a trailer and can't ever see the need for one, I'd definitely be curious as to how I can determine my upper limit.

I am a serious cyclist (and occasional USCF racer) and brand new to the Z4 world, having purchased by ''06 3.0si (only 7200 miles :)less than two weeks ago! My first call was to Burnsville, (Minnesota) Trailer Hitch because a sales guy at Motorwerks told me they have a hitch and bike rack for the Z4.

Help! BTH told me they had nothing for the Z4. Do I need to go to Madison and have John the welder do it?

I see you use a Saris. Could you use another style of rack? Do you have a picture of the rack with the bikes on Thanks so much! This forum has restored my confidence that there is a solution and soon I will be driving to races or rides with my Z4!

I've used the Saris bones rack and from what I can tell, it seems to work just fine. Still my pals at Saris say it's not as good as they would lilke so that's why it's not listed as compatible. I'd go to a shop and try it for yourself. If you only race occasionally, and have a 2nd vehicle, I'd probably go with the Bones rack. If you want more frequent trips with the bike, I'd call Rick Autobody (see first post in thread for details) and have him make you a hitch. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
