Afternoon all

I am after a bit of advice as i am considering part exchanging my current Z4 Roadster, 2.2 2004 reg for a Z4 E89 3.0 2010 reg and would like to know your thoughts on what you think my car is worth?

Colour is Red, 2.2 roadster, cup holders both sides, cruise control, Wind deflector, bodywork in decent condition, part service history not main dealer and currently on 55,000 miles and not been serviced in last 2 years as the mileage that i do is very low, kept in the garage over winter months

Garage that i have enquired with about the E89 only offered me £2,000.00.

Appreciate any feedback you may have or if i should try and sell privately :D

Thanks Steve

It's not what they are giving you so much as what's it costing you to change would be my thinking.

Agree, we bought a new i3 last year and managed to get a shed load of discount which made up for the pants trade in value on the car we were swapping. It’s the overall cost of the deal to you that you need to consider :-)

Thanks for your replies so far

I will have to try and haggle the screen price down as you suggest to get a better deal if i can, i have not driven the E89 yet so i am looking forward to it and also the bigger 3.0 litre engine

I hate buying from traders, and always prefer to buy private... having said that, when I’ve bought brand new, or ex-demonstration, cars in the past I’ve never traded in and always sold privately.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but I doubt the dealer will be chomping at the bit for a 2.2 to resell, so he’s probably not offering you a strong price for it against the real value of the E89 (I don’t mean the window price!)... but it is still a 6 pot and so infinitely more desirable than a 2.0 E85 (IMHO)

It’s a difficult time for everyone, but if you can afford to I’d haggle hard for the best ‘straight purchase price - without PX deal you can do, and sell yours privately

It’s a good colour and 55k is low miles, depending on condition & spec it may sell for a decent price even with the lack of a recent service

I got offered £2700 for my 3.0si against a 3.0i e89 a few years ago, I opted to sell it on here instead for £5k.
It sold in A few hours, i doubled my px valuation and someone got a bargain priced car. Everyone’s a winner :P

The extra options on the car do nothing for the price when a trader is valuing it, the only "benefit" to them would be that it might make it easier or quicker to sell. Also, and by law, they have to provide some level of warranty, specifically it has to be fit for the purpose, and that even applies when they say "trade only sale", so they have to build that margin into whatever they're buying in; caveat emptor/buyer beware has as much value in law as making a teapot from chocolate has for a nice drink.

There are no rich car traders, unless they're dealing in very, very top-end kit, so don't believe that all of them are rolling in and just out to give you a spank.

£2k, to me, doesn't sound too unfair given that 99% of stock at the moment isn't moving, and probably won't for at least 2-3 months after lockdown ends. As someone else has said, it's not what you get for yours, it's what you have to give to get the car you want.

Over here in the States, a 2.5i with low mileage like yours would sell for around $6-7K USD - well at least before the COVID-19 pandemic. We don’t have the 2.2, it’s not a direct comparison, but hopefully helps you gauge value.

If it’s a 2nd/ weekend car you have and you can afford to buy cash then make the dealer a cash offer at say 15 to 20% off the screen price, be prepared to walk away if he’s not willing to meet your offer or close too. If you buy the car then advertise yours on here or other selling sites, it may take time to sell but you will get more than the PX Offer, if you can’t afforded to buy 1st then sell yours and then see what’s available then, there are always plenty of cars for sale, it’s just a question of waiting for the spec you are after.
If it’s your daily car and you can’t afford to buy first then you don’t have many options apart from finance or PX. don’t rush into buying the first one you see, make sure it Is the colour and has all the options you want, There’s nothing worse than buying a car and then feeling you had rushed into it and not got the one you dreamed of.
From the photo and description yours seems a great car and I’m sure you wouldn’t have much of a problem with selling It

You think they'd have 20% of margin in a car, or more likely 30% if they're going to give someone 20% off and still cover their own costs?? Really....????

Go into the Coop and make an offer of 20% off your shopping.

I didn’t say the dealer would accept the offer, these are hard times for people at the moment and he may be desperate to move stock

Personally I think the part exchange value is not too far out, as others have said, private sale would achieve the best price but can be more work.

Why not have a chat with the dealer say be open that you would like more for yours, and see what deal can be done. Most traders are open to negotiation however I would not go in asking for 20% off as most simply so not have that margin within their cars!

By the time it's serviced and the statutory warranty is taken in to account it's not worth a decent dealer retailing your car unless it's a pretty small scale outfit. I'm guessing £2k is a value that a trader further down the food chain is offering to underwrite at.

Unless you are getting a bucket load off the sticker price (which you should at the moment) then what's the hurry? Your car would sell privately for a lot more than £2k once things lift a bit in a couple of months, otherwise you are investing money in an e89 that is just depreciating in your garage. Go haggle :)

I will try that Z450 thanks for your reply.

You should advertise it in here as well, nothing to lose in doing so and you improve your chances of a better deal over all

Still waiting for dealership to come back to me with better offer, they say can't come down anymore due to stock issues and the lockdown situation so i will wait another few days to see if they are desperate to sell :?

A small deposit paid to reserve the car and they have taken the E89 off their stock advertisment sales and Auto trader, too far to collect at this moment so will also see if they will deliver to me in the next week or so
