Trade in price

I always knew from the start that I should have going for an automatic , so yesterday there was a nice one for sale in Glasgow. It's was a demonstrator. It was a white one , automatic and a lot of option, nice car. When I drove it I was surprised that it was even slower then my 2.3 . Cutting a long story short, they offered me 16k for mine. it only has 13,000 miles , garaged , leather heated sport seats, wind deflector professional radio. Ash wood trim. I was ver surprised and the trade in price, the cheapest I could find on the bmw website was a 2011 with 67,000 miles for 17.5k.

I'm afraid that wood trim doesn't go down well in german cars
Its even getting the  in new jags now.
I'm not having a go. Everyobe has their own tastes. But the majority of buyers will want techy looking interiors.
So the dealer is factoring in that he may have to wait for a buyer who wants a wood interior
Also they have to have their frightening markup. They have to pay overheads like that nice coffee you had whilst browsing.
Try selling privately.
More hassle but more money.

It's not the spec of the car. It's BMW being a stealer my last car they offered me 7500 originally before i haggled. It didn't even get to the forecourt and they sold it for 13k

They just try it on. Sell it privately there will be a buyer out there :)

Also depends how much money they have in the car they are selling. But as Tom says you need to haggle, they will always start low.

They are buggers aren't they? When I looked at a new £46,000 5 series a bit back, they came up with 17K for mine. Not too bad, but when you consider its original price, I just couldn't part with it for such a low figure. So, I paid my car off instead. Unless it now causes me proper grief, its a keeper. The silver lining is I own the car, no more payments and my mortgage will be repaid several years early!!

Do a glasses guide. Parkers is similar, its the minimum you should get.

I did a post going over this and my experience (just a few). you dead right look at the current bmw used cars for similar to yours.

Dont forget they need to warty the car get it to some sort of condition, so if your rubbers are 3mm they need to be replaced, mot, service all need some life all can take the offer price down.

In May my 10 plate 30i auto 32K miles mint, new rubbers mot march, new rear pads I got 17K from a original start of 15.5K. glasses was 18K. Got bmw protect and 5yrs service on the new car which made up another £800. I dont think they had a lot to move on my new car reg date 21/1/13 28i msport + options, 28 miles £24,995 this was in May so original price £37K+ so lost MORE THAN 12K in 4 months!!!.

Word of caution they put the 30i up for 18K and it took about a month to sell, it was the cheapest 30i 10 plate by 2K, and they had to put 12 months warty on it but nothing else needed. I doubt they would have got the full asking price. I could not even try to sell at that price, as I would need to cover the 17K finance and insurance and tax while trying to sell it and no warty. I did have extended warty at £40 per month so could of offered 12 months at £440 but that simply eats in to the 1K potential profit. JUST not worth it, just give them my credit card to put 8K on and the car. I get 1% back on the card.

I've just traded in my car. The time has come to focus on marriage and (eventually) kids. I always knew I wouldn't have long with the Z but its better to have loved and lost etc...

2012 sDrive20i Msport, Alpine white with coral red interior. 16500miles, heated seats, wind deflector, heated steering wheel and cruise. Soon to be on sale at Macklin Motors in Dunfermline.

Bought it new for about £24.5k last March. Got a trade-in of £20.5k. So in the 18 months it lost around £4k from the purchase price. I'm actually quite impressed with that! If it continued to depreciate at the same rate (it shouldnt depreciate quite so much since depreciation tails-off as the car ages) it would have lost £8k after 3 years. So a guestimate, real-world, 3 year value of about 67% of purchase price.

That's the thing... the discounts that were made (and still?) on the 20i from its RRP mean that most who bought these get a very very good trade in deal. Its not the same for those that bought second hand where no/minor discount was made. Nor back when BMW were not discounting as heavily as they are now. The car was probably 32K, you got it for 25K the dealer or BMW lost out on that value, but its depreciation still starts from the 32K mark hence why 20i owners, provided they got the huge discount, will do very well at trade in.

You did well there, with the dealer deposits atm I cant see BMW offering amazing trades.

List price with options was a bit over £33k I think, so a bit over £8.5k discount. I can certainly understand why early adopters of the E89 would be VERY unhappy!

Which means in essence the car has depreciated from 33K to 20K, that's a 13K loss in real terms only partly borne by you ( ).

Its not something that worries me any longer as I paid off my car and intend to keep it. Depreciation is only depreciation when you sell it. It just flew through its 4th year/2nd MOT, looks as good as new if not better, and has just 23k miles on it. I keep looking at other cars, but nothing is special enough to make me spend more money. Perhaps OP its better the devil you know?

i wasn't in the market to sell but on discussing a car for my wife the dealer made me what i thought was a crazy offer for my Zed for cash as i was trading in her car
£19k ! when i found my purchase receipt i had only paid £19270 for it 10 months earlier so off it went

i thought they had a buyer for it but just seen it on there website for £20840. i tried at a couple of RR dealers against an Evoque and got 17k tops....lucky i guess

in the end they took both cars off me for cash (combined deal of £3.5k more than any other dealer and £5.5k from some) and i bought a new mini on pcp with zero deposit and 200 quid a month which i thought was a cheap way to finance the Evoque which i then bought for cash

I am going thru exactly the same thing ....I really really can't find a better looking car with enough options like mine...and our cars are bloody gorgeous.

It's easy to be complaiciant but I love my car....
