Tracking

As I fitted my new wheels yesterday I thought it would be a good idea to have the tracking checked, so took it to kwik fit. They had it up on a ramp and used the hunters system. They then informed me that the car was way out and proceeded to correct it. However they did come across a few problems. One being that one of the bolts they needed to adjust was under the exhaust pipe so they couldn’t get to it within the afternoon. They then also said that they needed a specific tool to adjust something under the bonnet which they didn't have which BMW only have, but I could get one off eBay! So all in all came away not knowing whether the car has improved much on what it was before. So here’s the report they printed off. Can anyone tell me whether it is good, bad if it’s worth getting this tool from ebay and removing the exhaust to get everything spot on?

Jamie,
I don't know what they are talking about re the exhaust. Mine's been looked at a few times and no such mention, nor of a special BMW tool.

Personally I'd go elsewhere and I'd want the 'reds' sorting out. Seems they did cure or improve some issues, but took others like thrust, close to limit and induced new errors.

Correctly set up does make a difference.

I had mine done today also and was told the same about a tool that was needed to adjust the front camber. I have to go back next week and they will finish the job. They had just got the Hunter kit in a week ago they said.

Drives super though after! I had really bad rear camber after lowering and adding spacers and they were able to adjust it so it sits a lot better on the tyre! Hopefully less inside wear from now on!

I assume that the suspension of your 3.0i is almost identical to my Z4MC. if so, then you adjust the front toe angles on the tie rods which are very easily accessible. Camber can be adjusted by pulling the locating pins and moving the top mounts on the top of the suspension towers.

At the rear, you adjust the camber on the eccentric bolts at the base of the wheel hubs and you can also adjust rear toe at the same time on these eccentrics. You also adjust rear toe on the trailing arm bracket in the cill in front of the rear wheels.

No special tools are required to do any of this: I've adjusted the geometry of my car myself with a floor jack.

I went on allignmycar found a place in derby 2 miles from my house and 1 hour an £60 later they sorted my car. Used weights in the drivers passenger ad boot even.

Thanks for comments. Will look into taking it somewhere else, any recommendations around Coventry west midlands area. Does anyone know what this tool looks like? Apparently I should be able to get one on eBay for £30.

Not having much luck searching for garages on net with Hunters system. Anyone know of any round Solihull, Leamington, Warwick, Coventry they can recommend?

Is Telford too far??
Doseley Motor Bodies have just done my sister's TT after it trashed a set of fronts in 2.5K I'm going to take mine there when I get a chance.
