Tracker on my Z4

I'm soon to pickup my new Z4 next week and I'm looking at Trackers, although probably overkill, I'd want to know if it ever was stolen I'd stand a better chance of recovery with a tracker fitted. Although I'm not 100% sure how police track cars with a tracker tbh.

A friend of mine who has a tracker fitted on his company car was showing me he has the ability to login to view the cars history (Ignition on/off and whereabouts) via an App or a web based browser which sounds pretty cool and I like the idea of being able to check in on it.

Im not fully up to speed if this is a standard option on Tracker systems, as after a brief Google I think some of the tracking companies only activate the tracker once you've reported it lost / stolen, but I like the idea of being able to login via an App on demand.

This is the one I've come across which sounds like what I'm looking for, although would be interested to hear other peoples thoughts / opinions

I have a Cobra tracker on my Zed. I had one fitted to my Transit a couple of years ago. I can view the whereabouts online. check them out, cheaper than tracker and Cobra fitted at the dealer before I collected it.

The only issue with Cobra is that they use gps.

a quick search on the internet and you'll come across them quite readily available.

Tracker however use other systems in addition

I have a back2you - £200 But only works on GSM but you can interrogate via a text message

Be aware that some people on this forum have reported being asked for increased insurance premiums because they have a Tracker fitted.

How does that work?! Interesting as I was considering tracker too. I'm being offered a discounted deal as my old 530 had tracker but surprised to hear it puts the insurance up - would hope it would've been the opposite!

Thanks for the replies :)

After some research online, speaking to my local police authority (Wanting to find out their success rates for finding stolen cars with trackers! - apparently not all patrol cars in ym area are fitted with the tracking equipment) and my insurance company (esure) who said having a tracker made no difference what so ever, they gave me 2 quotes, 1 with and 1 without the price was exactly the same.

Apparently esure will only request a tracker to be fitted to cars they insurre over the 50k mark, anything below that wont make a difference I've decided to do the next best thing.

I have about 4/5 spare iPhones knocking round the house, I've put a SIM card in and enabled the 'Find my Phone' feature on the Apple website, so whenever I login it shows me the phones location, as it's a spare iPhone as long as it's left in the car it'll pretty much do the same think, I wont have the luxury of having the tracker ability if it was stolen (but by all accounts your relying on the police car having them fitted, and a car being within range of the signal of the tracker) I think the Find my Phone thing is the next best and cheapest option.

But you got to make sure the iPhone is charged often?

Yeah thats theonly downside, but I'm just going to stick a USB charger cable or a cigarette lighter charger cable in and charge it every now and then, they last about 2 weeks without a charge if its not being used.

Do you know you already have tracker on your Z4 and only needs activating

Not all Z4's had one as standard. Sytners fitted them as standard to all Roadster S cars, but my M didn't have one and I had one fitted before I collected her.

A bit of a bugger if I fitted one unnecessarily though :?

#108 didn't have one fitted when I bought her (also checked with tracker). Had to pay to get a new one fitted :(

Cobra use GPS & GSM as well as systems to alert if signals are jammed. I have had a number of alerts with the van for various reasons and I am happy with the system.

Mark, you may have a TRACKSTAR fitted as Sytner beggar about with suppliers. Some ALPINA's have TRACKERS, some have TRACKSTAR. One of mine has both, one has just a TRACKER  The car with both has one installation which is fairly easy to find (lousy fitting, really *tut*)...so hopefully as a result the theives wouldn't look for and find the other

Currently, BMW are offering TRACKSTAR fitting on new BMW's pre-delivery, not TRACKER.

Cheers Ade.....didn't know that.

You do realise I am now going to need to hunt them down, don't you ;)

You'll probably find nothing, although I had a chat with Matt a few months back and he told me all ALPINA's had something fitted from new (EXCEPT the D3/D3BT's) due to their own insurance demands. I was confused by one of mine...it took some tracking-down so to speak. A few phone calls may elicit some info: they will usually talk if you give them the full BMW (not ALPINA) VIN as they would like to take your money if at all possible  .

Cheers
