Track insurance

Have any of you taken out specific track day insurance, and if so have you any recommendations?

Off to the 'ring at the weekend and want to sort some specific insurance out to give fully comp over the standard 3rd party that insurance companies have to uphold on 'tourist days'.

I do have track day cover as standard with CCI (Competition Car Insurance), but they won't include the Ring. I'm sure you can get companies that will cover it, but you might be looking at £200+

Had a quote for 3 days at £280 from MORIS........

Had a figure of £200 in me head.

What price peace of mind?

I've used MORIS a few times, and can't complain about the service. Although I've never had to claim :P

Do remember though that their Touristenfahrten cover (in the trackday section, but you select Touristenfahrten/Public Day as the name of the track) is 1st party only (i.e. covers your car only - unless you've taken out the option personal injury insurance).

If you want to reduce the premium, then you can call them and ask for reduced cover to cover just the chassis (as the mechanicals may be fine after an incident), and this will also reduce your excess.

You can also under-insure if you wish, which will also reduce your premium, but of course will limit the payout amount in the case of an accident.

Also check your road insurance policy VERY carefully as it may have a clause which lets them claim back anything they payout that they "would not normally have covered" if not for local legislation. The 3rd party cover under EU law cannot have any disclaimer for not covering the 3rd party, but they can put in a recovery clause to come after you for the fund they've paid out. In other words, if you take out a guy in his Veyron they will pay him, but chase you for the monies afterwards (that includes damage to other cars, and the cost of track closure, barrier repairs, air ambulance, armco replacement, track cleaning, etc.)

I've done a good few laps and never been anywhere near losing it, but that's because I want to drive home in it and will just drive at 8-9/10ths all day long, getting 99% of the fun out of it anyway.

I've been on the fence with getting track insurance while over here myself. For me, I'm not worried about what I will do, I'm confident in my abilities (plus I leave the traction controls on until at least half the day is over for me to learn the track). I'm worried about the other drivers out there.

Couple of links which may be of use:

http://www.leeds-solicitors.com/nurburgring_insurance.html
http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/insurance.html

Whilst these cover vehicles the second link advises on good medical insurance in the event of an injury collision.

My first trips to the Ring were done on the basis that it was a public road and UK vehicle insurance is obliged to cover you in Europe to the same extent as your UK cover - however things change with 'case law' (court decisions which give subsequent and similar cases a guide if not a clear direction on the way the court determine liability) and it would be a brave 'Ringer' who goes round without ensuring adequate cover.
