Well, as I bumped numerous times, I attended a track day session up in Pahrump. (Pic's to come later....and perhaps the vid I was able to get while it was very very slick-so boring vid basically
)
Mtheory was there as well sporting his very sexy M Coupe.
Saturday, the weather sucked. Each run group was able to do two run sessions, but the track was so cold and wet I don't think anybody's tire temperatures went up at all. One guy's psi actually went lower in his tire than when he started the track. So yeah the track was cold. The good thing about all this was I learned really good throttle modulation is super slick conditions and also about how fast I could take a corner without plowing.....which was very fast at all
Due to even worse weather rolling in and the rain not letting up they closed the track down at noon. They did open up an autocross/skidpad session for the people that wanted to stay.
I was going to go to that, but it was reported that over the mountain (way I have to drive home) snow was falling and sticking to the roads. Plus there was a 10 or so degree drop in temperature in roughly 10 minutes, so I left. The Z4 is a virgin no longer. It has now driven in every weather condition. Luckily for me the snow wasn't deep yet and there were plenty of cars heading my direction so I was driving completely through snow. We were all slow and safe.
Sunday:
Sunday was much better. The track had dried up great for the first run of the day, I was able to go real real fast fast. The second run of the day however it rained again and the track was slick again.
After lunch and by the third run the rain had slacked off and the track was dried up by the red & green run groups, so the track was pretty dry for me. I was able to go real real fast fast again. On the last lap, a Dodge SRT with some suspension package thinger that sounded like an equivalent to our sports package option caught up with me and I let him pass. Then I started pushing almost like I normally (my brake fade was still worrying me-see below) would to keep up with him, I was doing pretty good but then we got the checkered flag, so I didn't get to see what would happen in my set of corners that I know very well. We chatted afterwards turns out he's from a town that is all of 7 minutes from my house where I grew up. Neat!
I got to ride with one of the instructors in his 2006 Corvette C06 with the suspension package in it. God, what a car, what power & handling. I'm in love. No matter how fast we were going he'd shift to the next gear and my head would fly back from the G's. The car cornered great too, although I like to think that in one of the corners I might of been able to keep up with him if not gain on him...at least until the straight. Although the track was slightly wet still when we went around it, so maybe not
Unfortunately, I developed hot brakes. Luckily it was in one of my slower corners and I only ended up getting two wheels dirty. The brakes still weren't cooled off by the next run so I took it real easy for a few laps to let everything cool off. Now that I think about it, I think it may have been my brake fluid that was overheated. The reason I say this is because the last time I raced at this track, it was a lot warmer (like around 70-80 degrees) and I raced a full day Sunday and never once had brake fade, and that was only with Axis deluxe pads on front and stock rear pads/rotors. Of course, I'm fairly sure I was going a lot faster in the straights than I did on the last one.
Is there any good way to narrow out if it was my pads/rotors or brake fluid after the fact? At any rate, I'm considering strongly of ordering some race pads for the next track event. Or maybe going to the axis deluxe ULT's. Should I go with different rotors too?
