Track day tyre wear

I'd like to know people experiences of trackday tyre wear specifically but any insights overall would be much appreciated, thanks

Not done it in my Z (yet) but did a couple of trackdays in my Westfield SEiW. DON'T use your road tyres, whilst they probably won't get trashed they certainly will get some wear and you'll be picking track rubber off them for the next few days. :) Get a decent set of trackday tyres and put them on when you get there would be my advice.

Not sure what your real question is but yes, track days will wear your tires. Especially if you don't have a track set up where you can crank in a lot of camber. That being said I have a dedicated set of wheels with Hankook RS-3s and they have lasted for 16 or 17 track days of varying duration and condition.

Thanks for the replies guys, having never done a trackday before i didn't want to find myself in the position leaving the track with illegal tyres and am trying to gauge roughly what to expect if that makes sense :)

Which circuit is it and when?

What tyres do you have?

Surly it's more dependent on your driving style than the track and tyres. Best tyre in the world could be trashed in one lap if you drift the entire lap.!!

I tracked my E30 M3 on its road-tyres :o but didn't trash them [some say because I was too slow :| ] Pick-up was a problem, but on the run home that soon changed.

Your real question is "What brakes do I need?" [so you've got some left for the drive home :driving: ]

If you drift the entire lap on a UK track day, you'll be black flagged and sent home, thus ensuring no tyre wear issues to speak of ... ;)

You are right of course, but the circuit question was really to determine of it was a "proper" circuit or an airfield (which will have a much more abrasive surface) and if I had any experience of the tyres concerned which I could share.

sorry for the late reply

Hullavington airfield and currently on Conti's

I expect you'll have quite a bit of wear then, airfields are typically very abrasive.

Keep a close eye on your tyres during the day, and don't risk running below the minimum.

Re. the Contis, which ones? I've used the ContiSport Contact 2s and 3s to good effect on track (though not with the Z4); the ContiSports are pretty decent tyres; others I can't comment on.

Currently I use a couple of sets of track wheels - one with PS2s for wet days and another with semi-slicks for dry. Neither are my usual road wheels, but I do expect to drive home on the wheels I've used on the track. Ive only been caught out once having to change my fronts mid track day and driving home on illegal rears. I've driven at Hullavington and a new set of Contis should last you at least 2-3 track days there. You'll be frustrated by the outside shoulder wear on the fronts (can be reduced with more negative camber) and the inner third wear on the rears (can be reduced with less negative camber)

IIRC, these were Contis.

As mentioned above, your brakes will likely be the weakest link.
