Track day guys / tyre chunking

So had a good day out at Abingdon today, not the first time this year but first time I had this problem at the end of day:

Some decent size chunks missing. Only real difference from the other days was it was a fair bit colder today and I had the suspension a notch harder.
I’m guessing maybe just plain overheated or didn’t warm them up enough first seeing as it was colder?
Was running about 28psi cold (31-32 hot) on the fronts, 4-5mm tread left on Pirelli P-Zero’s. Was only on the front right, front left was fine, right tyres deffo took more punishment and was quite understeer-y out there which I guess doesn’t help.

Any ideas on how to mitigate this next time?

Looks overheated from either wrong pressure or as you say from repeated understeer .
What year is the tyre ? I can tell from the tread pattern they are older design P zeros & after many sets on many different cars know they are pretty average performers by comparison to what even so called mid range rubber can offer .

Had a lot of understeer today so suspect that may have been the main cause. 2017 tyres I believe, brought them on the cheap from someone moving them on, were pretty much new but yeah don't think I'll be getting them again, not overly impressed. Been impressed with the Vred Ultrac Vorti's on the rear however so will probably try the 'R' version of those tyres on the front next, see how they get on.....

If you are doing trackdays fairly often then why not invest in a spare set of wheels fitted with trackday specific tyres like Toyo R888 or Yokohama A048R ?
I used to do a lot of trackdays a few years back when I had my bike-engined kit car and had a set of 15" OZ Superleggera shod with Yokohama A048R medium compound tyres. It's well worth it if you trackday regularly, it transforms the experience. Amazing levels of grip and the lighter weight and stiffer carcass will get your suspension working properly too. IIRC the operating temps range was something like 45 - 120degC so you'll also have great difficulty in overheating them:thumbsup: 20200925_202547.jpg

Definitely thinking of going this way tbh. Maybe buy a cheap set of 18's and stick track rubber on. Destroying road rubber is an expensive hobby!
In fact, might start another thread with this topic in mind...cheers!
