Track Day crash Helmets

Hi guys

I'm planning on doing track day soon and I obviously need a crash helmet. My question is which is more comfortable / practical a full face or an open face. My thinking is an open face so you don't feel so restricted.

I agree that open face is less restrictive, and is certainly fine in a closed car like a Z4 (assuming you have a coupe of course) however, most TDOs require you to wear a full face if its an open top car. So a full face will mean you will be able to accept passenger laps in Caterhams and the like.

Also most TDOs have helmets you can hire on the day, so you don't have to have your own.
 
Try a few, it's the only way you find what suits you. Personalty I've always had a full face.
 
I found that the more the helmet costs the better they are to fit! But you don't have to spend a fortune. The last crash hat I brought had horrible graphics of clowns all over it! Because of that and it being a few years old I guess! It was cheap about £150It was a shoei and really snug and nice :)

It also saved my head when a car did a u turn. It cracked open I hardly had a sore head!!
 
Good point on the open top bit. Plan to do a few track days so will probably work out cheaper to buy a helmet.!!
 
Dont know if the same rules apply to helmets worn in cars but helmets worn at track days on a bike need to have a gold ACU sticker on it or its deemed unsafe and cannot be worn.
 
Open face helmet so that you can see and hear better. FWIW It's my understanding that some MB track events only permit open face.

A proper fitting full face helmet really won't feel restricted once you get used to wearing one. It's really just odd for the first experience. Echo the comments re - it'll allow top down driving. :thumbsup:

I like Arai, Shoei, Shark. - all respectable. Dont skimp.
 
I would go to a decent shop amd try on as many as you can. Buy the one that fits the best. Just like most things different brands/models are different shapes etc.

Having said that I needed a helmet for my westy as it had no screen to start with and as I was totally strapped fir cashI got a cheap bike helmet for 50 quid. It had some sort of gold standard to it and I was lucky as it fitted well. I still use it now even tho I intended to buy a better one I didn't as I stopped using it. They are fine once you get used to them.
