Track day brakes

Hello Everyone,

New(ish) Z4 owner and loving it.... and also new to the forum so first post here, "brake" me in gently! Excuse the pun πŸ˜‚.

Bought the car aiming for track days and have the first one booked for Bedford Autodrome end of the month. Time for new fluid and pads, any recommendations and experiences more than welcome please???? I was also going to do the cold air ram mod i found on here.

I've found from running my E46 M3 on track days that if you don't wan't to spend a fortune your best options are.
HEL braided lines
Race fluid
Pagid race pads, I've used RSL29s & 44s and found them both great.
 
RS29s are my go to option, but have also had good experience with Bluestuff when the RS29s weren’t readily available. Both are good on road & track (stay away from Orangestuff alas they’re no good for road use and take a hell of a lot of abuse to get them to work on track; Greenstuff/Redstuff/Ultimax are not up to track work). Have also had RS14 in the past when I was desperate, and they worked well too at Oulton Park.

There are loads of options though, from Project Mu, Performance Friction, etc. and I’m sure someone will be along shortly to give you the specifics on them.
 
The performance friction .11 compound seem to have that magic combination of incredible longevity, virtually zero dust, minimal warm up and superb fade resistance. To top it all they seem extremely kind to rotors. Had them on my E46 M3 for a long time and they continue to impress.

Cheers for all the posts, some good bits for me to look into and get ordered. Can't wait to give the Zed its first shakedown!
 
It is SO refreshing to see someone approaching their first trackday this way - absolutely the right way of going. I swear every other brakes thread recently has been 'should I get 400mm carbon ceramics with endurance pads for my first trackday' :lol:

Enjoy the trackday, it should be a hoot!
 
I'd advise taking the front fogs and access panels out... good brake performance is all about managing heat build up, and if your zed is the same as mine there isn't any front brake cooling ducts as standard.

I'd perhaps go for EBC blues as a cheap upgrade over standard pads, but if you get really keen, you'll need something more serious - I run performance friction PF08s.

other general advice, keep the stints relatively short and be sure to do a decent cool down lap before coming in. and keep an eye on tyre pressures, quite common for pressures to go up by 6psi when they get hot, in which case you'll want to drop them down.

2nd time to Bedford on the full layout, had a blast last time in someone else's car, done Silverstone and Truxton in the past but can't wait to get my own car set up and going more regularly 😎

Cheers for the car specific advice. Did keep a good eye on all temps last time and spot on best way to enjoy it, warm up lap, some hot laps and then cool down.....and then don't put the handbrake on when u pull in the pits! Interested to see how the brakes hold up after the work. Did get some noticeable fade in the 911 Carerra 4s we were in last time.
 
Im at bedford in the zed on saturday, will see how it goes! Gonna be a wet day, so might experiment with a wet line through corners, all the hairpins are treacherous in the wet!
