track day brake problems

Advise please.

Got myself a 2003 3.0 manual.M sport suspension.

First of all what a superb car on track even better than on road, BUT.....

I fitted new front Ferodo discs and Ferodo pads.

Just done Donington track day, lap 3 severe brake fade with passenger, i let them cool then did another 8 laps on my own, result was with less fade but pad warning light on lap 5, on inspection the new front pads were down to 2mm and my wheels were covered in pad/disc material a very dry black powder that you could flick off with your finger :o

I do brake late and hard but expected more pad life than that as i use the same Ferodo pads on my track Puma which are superb. As far as i know Ferodo pads are not rubbish and i would be very surprised if genuine OEM BMW pads were much better.

Does anyone else have experience of this when driven hard during a track day??

What race spec pads would you recommend ? :)

PS.My rear discs and pads also had a hard time although these were not new.

Have you changed the fluid to a higher temp type ? I had the same problem at the ring earlier this year with uprated pads but normal fluid and altered driving style and it was fine , I've changed to ate blue but not had chance to try it properly yet but it's always worked in my other cars in over ten years at the ring , euro car parts have it on the shelf

I run Ate super blue dot 4 without any issues :)

I also have 325mm front brake upgrade with braided hoses and red stuff pads and new normal pagid items on the rear. I would recommend fluid and braided hoses 100% :)

They are FDB 1300 pads with DOT4 and standard hoses, Mister T have you changed anything else from standard other than upgrading to DT2500 Ferodo's and i presume you also have 300mm front discs?

Any more advise as well as advise to date much appreciated.

This is on a 500+hp Nissan 200SX track car with 356mm AP Racing 6-pots.

The FDB1300 isn't really a performance pad. I'd look at Ferodo DS2500 or DS3000, Carbone Lorraine RC5+ or RC6 or one of the Performance Friction offerings.

DS2500 leave heavy pad deposits and lead to brake juddering from my experience (M3 on track with AP 6 pots and 4 pot rears). I had to run Carbotech ceramics (XP10) to clean the discs.

I have no experience with Ferodo but can highly recommend Pagid RS29 or the CL RC5+ for road and track duties. Use ATE super blue and Motul RB600 with good results too.

Your experience seems to be down to the wrong compound. Pagid, Ferodo, Brembo etc all make "pads" but for varying applications, go for a track orientated pad for the ultimate stopping power or a compromise pad like the RS29 for road and track.

I run Carbone Lorraine RC5+ on the front of mine. They rarely squeal and the braking is superb. Not had chance to get in on the track yet however the pads are very much track oriented.

The rears did rattle a little once they had settled in a little. Fine if your on track but annoying for daily use. I swapped these with a set of YellowStuff for the rear and all is good.

Next service ill be replacing the bruild fluid and upgrading to braided lines
