Tr6 to E85/86

Hi All
Just wondering if anyone has experience of moving from an early Triumph Tr6 to a Z4. I may sell the Tr at a later date, however as I’ve totally rebuilt it myself and owned it for over 20 years, I may not 4FE93668-BEFF-45AD-BD6E-FA53C1BCCD15.jpeg
Just wondering how different the overall ownership experience would be. I’m also undecided between the roadster and the coupe.

Thanks

CG.

Imagine a GT6 for the modern age. Add power, comfort and safety systems. Take away the rust (mostly), you’re in Coupe land. However, if you like a convertible only the roadster will do.

Apples to oranges really.

Funny but I just got my 1972 Triumph Spitfire running last week after years in my mother's garage. I bought it used in 1977 with 21+K miles and it now its nearly at 55K...So I put some miles on it in the day.

Granted the Spit is nothing like the TR6 in power, in fact the 1972 was the most under powered year made. British Leyland was trying to meet US pollution standards. The timing spec was actually specified at 2 degrees AFTER TDC...how stupid it that. I think I usually set it about 12 degrees BTDC. Anyway the next year they upped the 1296cc to a 1500...

That said, my initial statement stands. I think it is like comparing apples to oranges. One thing, the Triumphs are very simple basic cars, easy to work on, no electronics (though I did upgrade the Spit from points to electronic ignition). Small, light, fun, handle well and I don't really want to sell my Spit but if it came down to one or the other, the Z4 (mine is a 2004, 3.0 nicely speced) would win hands down. It's a dirt bike to a sport bike comparison IMO. Love the Spit, don't get me wrong but the Z is worlds apart from it.

My advice is keep them both if you are able. I don't know about you but I usually regret selling things I have owned for a long time and getting them again doesn't usually happen and if it does the price tag is enough to make one cry.

I suppose what they have in common is both are 2 seaters, RWD with a naturally aspirated straight 6 and a manual gearbox (in most Zs anyway).

I've only had E86s because I think they look fantastic, but both models have their fans - it probably depends which you prefer, although Coupes tend to cost a bit more. But handily the only Coupe engine options are 3.0Si or M. :D

But looking at your TR6 and with your history with it whatever you get I'd really want to keep that!

Hi bigwinn
It’s a great little car but probably not a patch on the Delta but with its 1600 twin cam engine it drives really well. Quite an advanced car when it first came out. Unfortunately it’s been on SORN for a couple of years now but next year I’ll get the couple of little jobs done and get it back on the road. It’s only done about 66k miles. I’d love an Integrale though. I’ve been doing some work on my youngest son’s VW Corrado 2.9 VR6 to get it through the MOT this week, now that is a beast.
