TPMS explained please

Hiya

Can someone explain TPMS, how it works, and what happens if you omit it when fitting new wheels.?

2005 E85 2.2

Many thanks

As far as I understand it the tyre pressure monitoring system on the E85/86 works on the difference seen by the abs sensors

When a tyre is low pressure its size changes, effective circumference and so the abs sensor sees that and you get a warning

A tyre fitter told me that there was wheel tyre sensors fitted, only when he popped the tyre bead down did he change his mind normal valves.

Exactly that - just remember to reset the system if you pump the tyres up or swap wheels!

I think E89s use sensors fitted to the valves in the wheels.

My late 2009 E89 uses the ABS system. I think it changed to sensors later on but I’m not sure when.

Thanks, I know they did at some point because I bought a set of E89 wheels from a forum member a couple of weeks ago and they have the valve sensors.

E85 is as above. System compares the wheel rpm L to R if uneven assumes change of circumference caused by deflation of tyre and on pops the lamp. How it does this going around corners I have no idea.

My September 2013 facelift car uses abs sensors, i think they changed to tyre pressure sensors shortly after

Steering angle sensor so waits until in a straight line or is clever enough to do the maths for the corner

Correct, tyre pressure monitoring is ignored when there is steering angle sensor input.

Does the ///M have one of those? Hydraulic steering. Guess it must have one.

Mine's a 64 plate and has the sensors fitted.

It’s an input into the stability control

Brilliant, thanks for all that info.
Suits me perfectly. New style 107's winging their way here. New tyres to be fitted, so at least there is no faff with valves.

I may be being dim here but if the valves are changed when new tyres get fitted does the TPMS unit need to be changed as well or is it fitted to the wheel?
My experience with TPMS on a motorcycle is that it's quite a big unit that goes inside the tyre so you'd never miss it if you have new tyres. If the one on the Z4 is part of the valve could it have been thrown out when the new tyres were fitted?

I'm not in a position to ask them until tomorrow and I'm not close to the car to check the settings

They’re battery operated so it makes sense to get them replaced while the tyres are off to save more aggravation later on? :?
