TPMS designed Wheels....

Hi All

I’m about to put tyres on some OEM 437M wheels that are normally fitted with TPMS valves.

My question is, do we think BMW have catered for the additional rotational mass of that type of valve in the design of the wheel and therefore, even though I don’t have the TPMS system, should I fit TPMS valves so that I’ve added that weight back onto the valve in hope that the tyre fitter doesn’t need to attach loads of wheel weights on the opposite side?.....

Ponder, ponder....

I don’t think bmw will have altered the balance of the bare wheel to compensate for the valve type.

I used to get Yokohama AVS tyres fitted on my old 2.8i Capri and they had a series of coloured dots showing the heavy point, where to line up with the valve etc.
Not seen any newer tyres with that on though, but when I had my Assy5s fitted to my E89 the fitter was a bit more old-school than the majority and he took time to rotate the tyre to find the best compromise, meaning he then had to add less weights. He also told me that previously he had worked for a smaller independent tyre fitter and for really picky people, prepared to pay for an extra 15 minutes per wheel, he would fiddle around to hide the weights behind the spokes.

So, back to the point................. with so many variables to consider, I would fit standard valves and take a little longer to get the tyres better balanced.

Cool - thanks for your thoughts guys. Should save me a lot of pointless money on TPMS valves I don’t need!
