Toyota Prius & Hybrids

Toyota Prius, just what is the point!

It's no secret I've never been a fan of the whole Hybrid thing, in my opinion it's a huge environmental con job especially when you look at the whole operation to mine the ore needed for the batteries and what what to do with them at the end of their life.

Well over the last couple of weeks I've had the misfortune to have one as a hire car and it has done nothing to disprove my misgivings.

That said the interior is a reasonably nice place to be and that is about the only nice to thing to say about it.

When it comes to actually driving it the only time the batteries do the driving is when it's reversing, you only have think about accelerating and the 1.8ltr petrol engine cuts in, this coupled with a automatic gearbox that sends the engine revs soaring with no discernible increase in speed means over the 2 weeks I have been driving the car I have seen a best of 45mpg when driving so slowly it was almost embarrassing to about 35mpg when driving as I would normally, all this has been done with it supposedly in Eco mode, that is the engine stopping when you lift off the accelerator and when waiting at traffic lights etc. I genuinely can't see why it even has the battery pack as the engine is running 95% of the time when you are moving.

These figures are easily achieved and beaten by the plethora of uneco-friendly small Turbo Diesels we have available in the UK (and even when I'm in the mood and driving like Miss Daisy in my 04 2.5 Z4), which don't need Lithium Ore transporting backwards and forwards across the planet.

Has anyone else any experience of these things?
Am I missing something about them?

I am not a fan of them & you can buy diesels with better economy so what is the point of them & imo they are one of the worst looking cars on the road, but if anyone owns one on here then they are great

I'm sure I read somewhere that you have to do something like 100,000 miles in it just to offset the damage it causes by being made...

We had one and a Lexus for trials at work, I had the Prius for half a day and the Lexus for a full day, rubbish, as you say Richard you put your foot on the accelerator and all they do is rev, got the Audi instead :driving:

Also, at around 100,000 miles or in 7 to 10 years you can expect to replace the batteries which will cost $2,000 to over $4,000 in the US depending where you buy them.

I spoke with Lexus (Toyota) European sales director a few weeks back and he said that Toyota (including Lexus) have now sold 6,000,000 hybrid vehicles so far since production started.

Hybrid sales in the last year were 1,500.000 units.

The new Lexus IS hybrid is some neat piece of kit.

I got to compare the IS on a handling course against a BMW 3 series, Merc C Class, Audi A4 and Volvo S60 and it was a revelation in performance refinement and driving ability. in fact it was in my opinion the class of the field and I have been a BMW owner for many, many years!

PS in a few years time i bet that most vehicles will be hybrids. we will wait and see.

I have never had the privilege of driving a Prius, fortunately. I have however noticed that many people who drive them are actually bigger kn0bs than many in 'prestige' cars. It's weird, but I have lost count of the number of times over the last 12 months that I have been a) tailgated in reasonably slow traffic, b) pulled out in front of (and subsequently very much slowed down) on the motorway with no warning, and c) cut up in traffic by Prius drivers. They seem to think that having a supposedly Eco Friendly car makes them some sort of Driving Superhero - honestly, I never thought 'that' sort of person drove a Prius. At least you expect an Audi rep-mobile driver (specifically trying to exclude Audi drivers on here :D ) to act like a c0ck and so have some warning through learned behaviour. I am constantly being taken by surprise, and quite frankly it is quite ruining my view of being environmentally friendly :x

Rant over :D

On the Lexus IS200 - I am a closet fan. Had one of the first gen, loved it, and it saved my life on the M4. It was a very well put together car.

I had a cayenne hybrid loaned for a week when I was waiting for my new cayenne.I was very impressed and was tempted to change but the sums didnt add up.I was very impressed with it on a 400 mile motorway trip.

I like the Prius and the Civic IMA hybrids and I certainly see a place for them in the market.

You want a town runaround capable of low cost (good mpy, low tax, low insurance, petrol engine) with a good size vehicle and not too big an engine. Diesel is supposed to be a no-no for short journeys so this ticks all the boxes.

I've been in my colleagues 2006 Prius (1.5) and its very smooth, very quiet, very relaxing to ride in. I would certainly have one as the family run around any day.

I've seen some decent reviews for these.
Having no doors is asking for trouble in any town. I know there's a retrofit for them and available as an optional extra.
Be interesting to see what the Mk 2 brings.
