Toyota GT86 driven

I've been lucky enough to have driven Toyota's new GT86, not only driven it, but round a track. What's there to say compared to my Z4. It feels very much lighter and more nimble.it has plenty of power as it is pretty light, it even makes a good noise for a 4 pot.The brakes felt strong despite not being the biggest,but the car is light.My Z was a little bit quicker BUT much more of a handful.Would I buy one,close, BUT for the £ 27k I'd spend on one, I'd have a nice used 911.
 
I think it'll attract a lot of buyers... Japanese RWD fun in the mould of the AE86 Corolla... £27k is a lot of cash though...
 
I think it will sell well but I think the styling lets it down a bit compared to the original concept when it first appeared the lines just looked a lot cleaner. Would not mind a blast in one though.
 
I totally get what they're trying to do. It's light and nimble and not big power.

Sadly, Renault are producing Clios with more horses under the bonnet, so for the money, they don't float my boat.

For £27k I would want more than the 231 horses my zed kicks out. Not less

Edit - just imagine hitting the dual carriageway and being burned by some Focus/Clio.... or me in my Z4 :evil:

Adamski, I agree, not enough poke for the cash for me. Smaller capacity engines without a turbo are not potent enough. I quite like the looks though.
 
It'd catch up in the twisties and on the brakes.On some of my favourite biking roads, the GT86 would be faster and more fun than my Z4,it's not all about BHP.When I did a trackday at Donnington in my Z4,there were a few high powered hatches,none of them could get all their power on the road without spinning it away,useless vehicles.One had 300 bhp,he couldn't believe I'd only got 231 as he could only just keep up.he'd spent loads on his car for nothing.Hot hatches are just shopping cars that have been to the gym,underneath they are still cheap commuter fodder,the GT86 has been designed from the ground up as an exciting to drive sports car,it doesn't need more power,it's not what it's about.
 
I am a big toyota fan since my celica.

And if and when they get the turbocharged boxer engine into and awd, i would be very very tempted.

The argument about "it would catch you up in the corners" or that "it's good on a track" is all well and good if that is how you will use it for the majority of time. If you drive it on normal roads and only rarely venture out into the sticks or track then the lack of performance becomes much more of an issue.
 
Where are you getting the lack of performance? There's plenty.If it had a turbo and AWD, the thing would just weigh more and knacker up a light balanced car and cancel out much of the perceived performance gains. That was always Subaru's problem,their cars were too heavy, so they added more power,more power needed more AWD and more brakes, adding yet more weight until no more speed was being produced,just wasted energy. If you are a traffic light GP merchant, then you'd buy elsewhere,however, for sheer fun, you'd buy one of these.Go take a test drive, a long one if you can get it, and see for yourselves.I'm not going to buy one,I love my Z too much. I too had a Celica a few years ago, it still is probably the best car I've ever owned.
 
I think the point about performance is that you can buy a small hatchback for less cash that has more power.

I don't doubt that the Toyota and Subaru will be well balanced and fun to drive. However, on an open stretch of dual carriageway, I would feel slightly cheated having paid £27k then find myself struggling to overtake a bog standard Renault Clio... which has more power.

I think Adamski's hit the nail on the head. Pound for pound it doesn't have the performance you'd hope for.

IMO you'd be better off buying a couple of years old Cayman. Within 12-18 months you'll also be just about able to pick up one of the early 'new' Boxsters (not the S obviously) for £27k as well.

That's like saying that the 2.0 Z4 is under powered for the price, and maybe you are right, but it's not the reason people bought the zed. You buy it for the looks, the feel and the enjoyment it gives on a hoon. You don't need lots of power for a car to handle sublimely, power just gives you higher speed more quickly

I would take the GT 86 over any hot hatch, period.
 
Paid 17k for 343 horses :D and a bit of a kudos badge.
Unlikely I'd be tempted to buy a Toyota for that money.

If I was the type that buys new, then it might be on my shopping list. Looks ok. But a 2 year old cayman would be the preferred choice for me with 27k.
 
wait 3 -5 years and it will cost about 10k.... would i buy it then..... still nope.... i'm not sold on the styling and 0-60 in 7.6 secs is pretty poor for any performance car...... the only reason why i put up with it in my z4 is because its a tad quicker, i can drop the roof and it looks stunning.

toyota are producing very average cars, that dont inspire any emotions at the moment and for that reason, i will continue to avoid their products

...and its that stereotyping they're now aware of and hence they're trying to address it with this car. Performance is not all about power and 0-60, its about handling and the thrill of the drive. We all love our Z's, but from what I'm reading, the GT86 is much more fun to drive. Lets face it, and I'm a fine one to talk, you can't use the power most of the time, but you can get the thrill of driving a car at speed on the twists, which is what this car is built for purportedly.

I'll have a test drive in the next few weeks and report back, but I'm hopeful it will be very interesting. (I agree on other comments about being over priced though, a tad)
 
Hold on Maniac!! Weren't you dissing the s-drive 2.0i's not long ago based on their performance? Bit of an about turn if you were!! ;)
