Toyota GT 86 and Subaru BRZ

Might as well I dont read it?

My concerns are going to be:
Terrible interior made from the worst plastics know to man.
No torque
Not enough power, would of prefered to see it around the 250bhp mark(200 is going to leave it a sitting target for the boy racer hatchbacks to pester)

This is the problem when a car is sub 200bhp. One day a Renault Megane will come along with 250bhp and make you feel like you're driving a 1.2 Nissan Micra :(

That's not really the point though, is it? It's a car that you can have fun without needing big power, big speeds.

i think everyones missing the point with these cars though, yes they dont have much power but i imagine they are gonna be huge with tuners, like the old ae86 used to be. I dont think its going to be long before people are whacking turbos on em!

I just saw a BRZ on the road. It must of been a press car and being tested by a journo as he had a voice recorder thingy and it's not out yet. All i can say is that it looked really good in the flesh and am very tempted but not sure if i could live with the interior.

EVO's conclusion on the front cover "2000 miles in the new BRZ - and why it's not good enough"

So not only is it under-powered, it doesn't compensate in other areas. It got destroyed by a Megane 265 Trophy around Bedford (5 secs slower). You'd expect it to be a lot slower on the straights because of the power deficit, but the disappointing thing was it was a lot slower in the corners. The comments.... "we so wanted the BRZ to deliver, to make a stand for rear-drive, but it misses by a mile. It's not agile and adjustable on track, and it's not much fun, either."

On the road versus the same Megane, 370Z and Mx5 it came last too. Comments "I hate to say it but the BRZ feels like it needs more power or a wet surface to fulfil its obvious and tantalising potential".

It's a big mistake to bring a £25k SPORTS car out and leave it so under-powered relative to its natural competitors. If you do you need to make sure the fun is very accessible and according to EVO at least, it isn't unless you are at ten-tenths on the effort scale.

This is sooooo annoying - I wanted the GT86/BRZ to succeed but doesn't sound like they've got the dynamics sorted. I could've forgiven the limited power if they got that right (as with MX5's, a lack of power can easily be resolved with a turbo), but if evo are slating it then that can't be a good thing. The size of the car and overall package just seemed right too. Dammit.

The video Evo shot was with an automatic... Is the car in the article still an auto??

Regarding laptimes, it's got PRIUS tires for God's sake and not only that but the rear tires are thinner than even the front tires on Z4's. What did you expect? As for the feeling it gives you, i have not read the article so cannot comment. :)

yes still auto, but with paddles. was the only car they could get.

yes it might have had mickey mouse tyres on it, but they were saying it was very hard to unstick the rear of the car even with the skinny tyres.

the article does say the subaru is setup differently to the toyota in terms of suspension, maybe the toyota will be more playful :?

Sorry but a torque converter auto isn't the sportiest of transmissions! I'm pretty sure they'd be faster with a manual!

Read the article Ga41. They prefer the Mx5, similar performance but £5k more in your bank account. Nothing to do with power, a lot to do with fun and value for money.

As a package it doesn't add up at £25k.

I'd worked that out a couple of (your) posts ago !!

Well, on the plus side Toyota are attempting to build sports cars again... few years back said dropping sport car manufacture to concentrate on eco cars... think they now realise just hw short sighted that was,

The old MR2 series might not have the grunt of the Zed, though the second hand one I owned took horrendous abuse day after day, almost indestructible & never had one once of trouble.

From little acorns large oak trees grow, let's hope they're squirrelling away on something jaw droppingly wicked, given the original MR2 was developed in partnership with Lotus...

Fingers crossed, though my Zed's not going anywhere soon (I think)
