Toyota GR Yaris

This interests me a lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyfOupPZy64

I'm still intending to downsize from my M135i as I barely use it (it's on c. 19k miles at over four years old) and I don't need its space or performance. I thought Toyota would struggle to sell the GR but when I watched Jay Emm's video he suggested that virtually all the order slots for next year were taken. I'm still hoping for a discounted one in 12 to 18 months' time!

Thoughts?

Its cool and all being basically a homologation special, and i appreciate the work thats gone into it but... its still a yaris, and still a hatchback, so its a no from me.

It's getting very good reviews on YouTube from the UK channels, but they almost feel overenthusiastic. A Japanese channel did a review of the car (in Japan) and they seemed a little disappointed. Hopefully it'll be possible to test drive one next year.

First time in years I am excited about Toyota. I am a little bit a jap fan, I owned legendary Ae86 (Hachi-Roku), drifted for a while, then I had an Miata for several years. What can I say from my experience, these cars are really reliable.

Now, having 2.5 inline 6, Z4, I am sceptic about 3 cylinders 1.6 engine with that much horsepower, and if it wasn't Toyota, I wouldn't even talk about that car.

But, honestly, this is a model that is produced only to satisfy WRC rules, so Toyota never had any intention to market this model, it is just to support 2021. WRC Toyota Yaris model. So, you are practically buying a black sheep made for WRC. Lightweight, all-wheel drive and enough power to have fun with. I am seriously considering to buy one, and I immediately got in touch with Toyota branch office for a test model. I am looking forward to trying one.

There is a good review in this week’s AutoExpress. They have given it 4 and a half stars out of five.

Looks like it's behind a paywall online and nothing on the AutoExpress YouTube channel yet. Shame, it'd be nice to see a video of Steve Sutcliffe driving it.

[ref]zriha[/ref], I hope you enjoy the test drive and please let us know what it's like! Some pictures of your AE86 would be great to see if you have any!

I quite like it but 34,375K with Circuit Pack and pearlescent paint is slightly eyewatering but has decent performance. It does look like Renault from some angles to me :o

I think PPF would be a must on those rear arches, the paint won't last 5 minutes after a spot of rallying :)

I just don't think I could swap the M140i for one though but as a second fun runabout it would tick the boxes.

Tim.

I too am curious about this Yaris and am a jap car fan, having owned:

Toyota Corolla GT Coupe (AE86)
Nissan 200SX (S13)
Mazda RX8 (HI Power)
Nissan GTR (R35)

I think it'll hold it's value and be a hoot to drive but it still seems a bit pricey. Big debate over on Pistonheads.

I'm still pondering.

Its not really a Yaris though, I think the only items it shares with the standard car is the front and rear lights, rest is all different :)

Here it is, but it is the photo already with the new owner. And an interesting thing, I traded key for a key this Ae86 for a Mitsubishi Starion 2.6 turbo. :)

I wish they would have left it as "it has a bespoke chassis" rather than "...the back is from a Corolla!".

[ref]Beedub[/ref], judging by Toyota dealers' adverts on AutoTrader, the waiting list for a new one is now about six months. I saw an advert for ordering a new one for delivery in June 2021. The occasional car pops up that's either a cancelled order or with an independent dealer. The latter have been priced at a premium (almost £40k). I suspect that the press fleet and demonstrators will be sold at some point and it'll be interesting to see what discounts (if any) are available.

ive got a test drive for tomorrow !!! may not be able to attend as im so busy at work.... but if im smitten.... sod it i'm going for it.

If you like it why not :driving:

Hope you manage to make time for the test drive and if you do be prepared to sign on the dotted line
