We have had a 2011 3.0 Highline Edition for a year and are planning our first foreign tour (if you exclude a blast around Wales). Aiming to follow the Giro (cycle race) and head to Northern Italy/Alps towards the end of May for a couple of weeks. The plan is to use the Euro Tunnel and then take 2 - 3 days getting to Venice. A week touring before heading back via Lausanne.

I guess boot space may be a challenge but would appreciate any advice/tips you might have gleaned during your tours of the continent, specifically the Alps in late May.

We went touring for a week and used a couple of the Ryan Air sized suitcases which fit nicely in the back of the E89. We had everything we needed, bought quite a few gifts & managed to get everything in with a bit of thought. With everything loaded we couldn't put the roof down but as we used various B&B's most of the time the boot was nearly empty to no prob getting the roof down in the sunshine. One tip, take the mini toothpaste/deodorant containers, there is enough to last a week & the full size cans take up so much space.

No problems touring with an E85.

Don't forget the shelf behind the seats

And there is lots of space behind and under the seats. No pics of that so you just have to trust me.

Mini toothpaste / deodorant containers ? It's the Mrs's make up 'trunk' that can sink your trip ! :fuelfire:

Enjoy your adventure.

There are suitcases made by TRIPP that are 410mm wide so two fit in the boot space perfectly and theres enough space to get other items in the other nooks and crannies ! All with the lid off.
Boot space is not a problem, we go away for a three week trip each year. She normally brings back stuff she hasn't worn.

Its also worth remembering that you are going to a very civilised part of the world and not up the upper reaches of the Nile.
They sell toiletries over there !

Are looking to do my first continent driving trip myself, except in August so I'm interested in any advice also.

Travelling from ????

We've done it for a few years in a Zed and even more with a tintent!
We tend to do (mainly) Netherlands, Germany, Italy and a bit of Switzerland and it normally August - We've always found that the weather seems to break after the first week in September.

Hi, new to forum but came across your question.
Wife an I toured a couple of years ago (going again this year having just bought our first z4 23i for the trip). We used the overnight auto train from the netherlands to Italy (stops just outside Milan). Whilst not cheap when you first look, when you take into account a couple of hotels, fuel and tolls it's not too bad and a great experience. (Dinner served whilst rumbling down the Rhine). The train is full of two seater classics and bikers going to tour. We actually then went around the northern lakes, onto croatia and back through the Alps. Highly recommended. This year were doing the German and Austrian route to croatia. Tr this website if you want to check the train options out. http://www.seat61.com/Motorail.htm#.VOJfT4HfWrU

I bought purpose made luggage from Germany - well made and not too dear at the moment due to the £ vs Euro. I think they cost me £115. They fit perfectly. I got the link from here but can't find it now ! D'oh ... it's on this forum somewhere !!

Here you go!
I bought mine on this site and their service is good - English on the page.

Currently showing €148

That's a good link _ we might be going down to a war grave in Bolsena next year and the train might be a change rather than the 1500 (ish) km drive

Are you sure? I have just bought 2 Tripp cases - Dimensions: Height: 67cm, Width: 41cm, Depth: 25-29cm and at first attempt am not able to get both in and put the roof down (2011 E89). What orientation do you use to achieve the impossible (ooh err missus) Pictures would be really appreciated.

Thank you all for your replies esp details on the motorail train - sound excellent and will prob book sometime.

Sorry, the Tripp comment was made re the photographs of the crammed full E85/86
I used the same cases in my E85 for only one season.

The only way to flit between hotels in an E89 (in my opinion), is to use the Roadsterbags. They also seem to hold their price very well.

On the touring topic but not the "how to pack everything including the kitchen sink in my E89" topic. I found this Land Rover guide to touring in Europe invaluable for my roadtrips.

I can recommend these cases for carrying a huge amount in:

They look good but they're a lot more expensive than the fitted roadster bags! :)
