Touring Makarska, Croatia

On a more positive note to the brake testing thread, over the weekend I toured around Makarska which is south of Split. The roads were fantastic and we managed to almost reach the summit (1600 metres), but the final few were dirt roads, so we avoided that!

It was a bit hazy but still 35c. I have a very small video to upload shortly too. I also threw in a few photos from the web because I didn't take any in the city!

Quite ironically I was telling my friend that there are only a handful of Z4 35iS's in the whole country (registered here) - Tomic the main BMW group only has 2 on their books. However, driving around the city we saw a Scandinavian and German 35iS! One was gray the other white :driving:

If any of you can get down to this part of the world with your Z, you'll be in for a special treat :thumbsup:

We had a holiday in Makarska back in 1988 (when it was still Yugoslavia) & just developing for tourists. Very beautiful scenery, we visited Split, Dubrovnik & Mostar (before they blew up the old bridge) & some of the islands. Unfortunately our hire car was a Renault 5 :( not a great car for twisty, steep mountain roads :rofl: Your Zed looks very cool.

Very cool! Things have changed quite a bit :) As you can see the roads are new !

I would have thought a R5 would be hilarious on that hill ! :rofl:

Thanks, I have a few tweaks to do visually - LED halo and stubby. Trying not to spend any money on bling and keep it focused on performance. Next serious mod is the Quaife for the DCT

If you mean being stared at...with people cheering, shouting "yes" (my plate) and stopping and staring...i guess that counts! I thought getting a black z4 would allow me to blend it much easier than a bright yellow or red Porsche... how naive can you be !

It doesnt help that the iS exhaust is pretty loud!
 
Went to Croatia a couple of years ago, stayed near Dubrovnik beautiful place. Enjoy your trip great looking car by the way
 
Thanks all, it was fantastic and the roads not busy outside the main strip. Looking at Go-Pros so I can get some decent footage!
 
Great pics, looks like a fantastic road trip. I was considering doing a similar road trip last year, but ended up going south down to Lake Como.what route did you take and how long did it take you to you to get to Croatia?
 
Why is it the sea fronts abroad all look lovely.

Then you go to a typical UK coastal town and reminds you what dump this Isle is.

I live over here as we have an office out here too. I take the Euro tunnel, then travel the fastest route to Würzburg in Germany. There are some lovely places to stay and it's much less chaos than staying in a major city. I travel from the UK to Würzburg in one day, roughly 8 hours. Second leg takes me to Zagreb, again roughly 8 hours. From Würzburg to Austria, Slovenia and Croatia.

The trip from ZG to Makarska takes roughly 4.5-5 hours, depending on traffic. It isn't that far from Dubrovnik either.

Overall it's a great trip and good experience. If you wanted a detour you can travel to Switzerland (I've done that once) but it adds 8 hours to your overall time ( 12 hours per day! ). If you wanted to tour you could spend 4-5 days getting to Makarska and stay in a few places along the way.

Because it is! Every time I go back and visit the sea on the south coast I last 10 minutes before I'm back in the car and off again. Most of the time windy, smelly and not very nice. It's a brutal coast, very arctic like. (Cornwall aside)
 
Croatia does look a nice place to visit. How does it compare cost wise to Italy? Me and the wife were looking at driving down to Italy next year but may also consider Croatia instead.

Much cheaper! Not even comparable (at the moment...). Fuel is currently ~92-93p per litre (super unleaded). The tolls in Italy are pretty expensive depending on where you go. Down to the Croatian cost is also quite expensive but as a one off it's OK (around £23) to get all the way to the bottom.

In Makarska we had a 5* apartment with its own pool and all facilities, onsite parking, 60e a night! The beach was 300 metres away, parking on the sea front was £2 for the whole day, coffee £1, local super markets etc. Don't even get me started on the quality of the women!

Can't get better than that :thumbsup:

As my girlfriend is from this region, I "must" go there quite often... :D

This August/ September we were visiting this region again (Zagreb, Bosnia, Bol (Island of Brac), Makarska Riviera, Krka). Makarska Riviera is very nice but in my opinion too crowded of tourists. There are much nicer spots to visit close to Makarska.

E.G. Bol is the most famous beach of the adriatic coast and there are also very nice curvy roads on Brac, only 45 min with the ferry and 20 mins drive away from Makarska:

Although the streets are not in the best condition, they are almost as curvy as on Corsica, which is the best and most beautiful island in the mediterranean sea. Beside all my experiences I was able to collect at the most beautiful regions of the coastal regions of the mediterranean sea, I had one of my best driving tours of my life on Brac this summer. There is almost no traffic and there seems to be no speed controls on this island...
