When downloading a "test" file I noticed that there is a download speed/rate and an upload speed/rate. Where is the upload going and what is this about?

Not exactly a technical reply but if you are talking about bit torrent downloads then the concept is to download from many sites until you have a full file assembled. At the same time others are downloading from you pieces you already have. The idea is that you upload at least as much as you download else over time the torrent dies If you don't allow it, or cut off files too soon, restrict your upload speed, then your download may be restricted or access limited to future attempts.

Techies can dismiss my understanding or better explain

Pretty much how I understand it as well.

Download speed can be really slow.

I downloaded a movie for my daughter and it took over 2 days... :o

Your upload rate depends on how many people are connected to you. If there isn't anyone connected to you then it will stay at 0.

This can be caused mainly by Firewall software or Router or restrictions from your ISP, speed of connection, set up of torrent Client and also what parts you have recieved as others may already have them.

The secret to Bit torrent seems to be to keep the Torrent running for as long as possible. The more people sharing then the higher the speed becomes.

It really does work well when configured properly andcan become addictive too!

What they said. They all have it right. Back when I was using torrents, I had to restrict my uploads to only like 4 or so, otherwise my net would go slow just from the uploads. But yeah, with torrents your download is proportional to uploads. I've since left torrents (not all that secure ya know) and went with Newsgroups. Much faster. I can grab a DVD in an hour or two....and that's if I'm surfing the net/tying up my net connection.

Me and my friend used torrents alot way back when. Anyways, my friend gets home from work one days and discovers that he has no internet. WTF he says...so he calls up his ISP and asks them what happened. Apparently he downloaded a tracked movie torrent and since that is illegal he was cut off from the net for three days and they said if they (the people tracking the movie) caught him again they would press charges. So yeah, we quit using torrents.

Yes, this should be a serious concern if you are using bit torrents to download movies, music or anything copywrited as it can cause you some serious trouble.... :!:

Plenty of lawsuits going on about that. I would not touch it.

I can trace anything, so those who police the net can do the same to get to you ...

I know Germany was supposed to crack down super hardcore on all filesharing sites and their customers. Thankfully I left when I did :?

Use Newsgroups, much faster and less chance of tracking of the D/L, not that I do such a thing
