Torn Soft Top.

My Zed has just developed a god damn tear on the soft top and now I’m pissed! Looks like there’s something internally in the frame itself which has caused the tear and each time I have lowered the top it has gotten worse.

Just got home, raised the top and I can actually see it latched on to an inner part of the frame and the small tear is now a rather large gash!!! Great!!!

I had intended to change the fabric as it is completely rotten having been exposed to Mediterranean summers for all these years, however I’m worried now this may happen with the new fabric as well.

Is this a common fault?

Not a common fault. But as they age I guess more will do similar things. I would go with your repair if you have something lined up. I would expect another 15-20 years worth of up and downs, if it is as good as the original.

When the old top comes off you may be able to see what the problem is and either bend the offending piece back or use a piece of the old roof material to add an extra layer over it.

Good idea that Martin! My soft top does appear to have shrunk somewhat and looks misaligned in some places.

It has some sort of sticky residue all over it which is impossible to remove. The only mention of a similar issue I found on a Mazda forum, I think it’s some form of glue used to bond materials together which seeps through the fabric over time.

I reckon during the summer the glue melts, then as it gets cooler it hardens and the fabric becomes tighter until it rips like mine.

I will have to install the fabric myself. I found the instructions on the forum however it does not look easy. My friend restored a vintage convertible golf soft top with one he bought online and managed, and he said he’s up for it but I’m worried…

Where you situated…I have a perfect Roof ..complete just needs your Pump/motor

Hard top is another option. Found one close to me in good condition, the side cover clips included.

My car does not have the hard top kit installed. Any chance I could put the hard top on the car for the 1 short journey home from the buyers location without causing any damage to car and hard top until I find and install the kit?

Be careful, someone else on here had a hardtop fly off as it wasn’t as well attached as he thought.

Is the hard top kit anything more than just the connectors for the heated rear window?
