Hi guys which engine oil do you use or should you use for topping up?? The manual only mentions BMW oil...is it ok to use other oil??? if so which one??

Thanks

I use castrol edge 0w-30 oil, not cheap and comes in a rather odd 4 litre bottle.

same oil.

use what the car recommends. castrol syntec.

if not... use bmw high performance oil from the dealership.

i believe there are a ton of threads on this forum that discuss the topic of oil.. and oil changes.. and all that good stuff. believe me.. i've asked this question in the past.... and so have others. run a search... you'll find something.

i know this will be an age old question but............."i have had my car nearly a year and am still 2k from the service interval- do i go for an oil change or leave it to service? "

Make sure it conforms to BMW longlife-01 spec. BMW recommend Castrol Edge 0w30 oil....

Not cheap but 4l bottles cheaper in Halfrauds than the stealers (they charge by the 1l). Bought a small oil can to get around the awkward 4l bottle shape - no more spills and easier to regulate how much is going in.

I'm not an oil engineer, but I've always heard to not mix kinds or brands of oils as the additives can sometimes not "get along". Most definitely do not mix full synthetic oil with dino juice.

Was in sainsburys and they have castrol edge 0w30 but it says for diesels and 0w40 sport for petrols, is 0w40 okay or do I need to take it back?

Don't mix different grades of oil. There is Castrol Edge 0w30 available for petrol cars. You should use that as it's most likley already in the engine as pretty much all BMW dealers use it.

I don't really see the point in swithcing to different brands or grades when the BMW LL01 spec Castrol Edge is readily available. It may be a tad expensive, but forking out an extra 20 quid for the correct oil is peanuts, especially when it's going to last you almost 15k miles.

Sainsbury's isn't the ideal place to find a selection of oil (apart from olive oil  ). Halfords usually have a massive stock of Castrol Edge 0w30.

Erm.. mine registers straight away - but then I do have a dipstick. But the warning lights ceases right off :D
