Top Heavy

I recently had a new top put on my 03. It is a canvas top costing about $1500 installed by a shop that's been in business 20+ years. There were problems with the top operation before and after that installation. A BMW dealer's shop fixed most of the problem but said since the new top is not a BMW product and is heavier than a BMW product, it is contributing to the problem. In essence it is too heavy for the hydraulic system. Has anyone ever heard of a quality non-BMW top causing an operation problem?

Never heard of this issue. Could have similar implications for a couple of forum members who have changed their roofs

I've not heard of this either, but many people have had issues with the top not locking in the down position even with an OEM roof.. One of several causes is a portion folding out instead of in, causing the fabric to not compact as tightly. I can easily imagine a heavier fabric causing the same issue, even folding properly.

You don't specifically say what the issue is, so this may not relate to your situation.
