Top 3/Bottom 3

OK, as a new Z4 owner, I guess I am doing what a lot of us do: getting used to the car, working out the great bits from the mildly annoying. As I seem to have plenty of time to waste this afternoon (and this is w-a-y better than preparing that essay that was due in a week ago) anyone wanna join in?

Top three things that make you a happy Z4 owner (excluding the looks... we can surely assume we all like these sexy beasts) and the 3 things you wish you could change.

So, just for the record: I have a Z4 3.0si Sport Coupé in ruby-black.

Top 3:
1) The engine noise. After all the low-power stuff I have been driving (see other threads about getting over my driving phobia) the noise this thing pumps out is joyous!

2) The excellent interior. Not fussy, not MX-5 plasticky, not too showy. Just leather, nice plastics and a good solid lump or two of aluminum.

3) a) Yes, I am cheating. My two Basset hounds can fit in the trunk/boot with no problems! b) Is this the easiest, best driving sports car in the world? It really allows you to just focus on the fun stuff, without impossibly temperamental gearboxes, endless suspension settings, etc. The M suspension has one setting on mine: granite hard, just how I like it.

Bottom 3:
1) Not having PDC at the front as an option is kinda dumb. Not everyone needs or wants it of course, but for those of us with more driving enthusiasm than skill it would be handy.

2) The view out the back is just about OK, but if it's sunny the parcel shelf/baggage area cover has to be opened: it reflects too much light back up onto the rear window.

3) Speedo and sat-nav can occasionally be a little tricky to read at a glance. That or my eyes are getting feeble in my dotage.

Actually, I admit I found it pretty hard to come up with a bottom 3 (PDC excepted).

Nice idea for a thread
Z4 M Coupe

Top 3:
1) a) The power and any-gear-will-do ability of the engine b) The noise
2) a) The feel of all the controls: gearbox, steering, seating position, etc, etc b) The interior: Nice materials in a nice design
3) The available mods

Look, if the thread starter's allowed to get away with a)'s and b)'s, then I can too :D

Bottom 3:
1) The cost of the mods
2) Rear window visibility - the only downside to otherwise excellent visibility, and made even more of a shame because the rear-view mirror somehow looks really cool
3) Erm... er... Oh, the fact that for 340bhp, you have to pay max car tax and therefore end up at the pumps more often than something equally as exciting like, ahem, a Prius.

Very new to the car as well: 2004 3.0l roadster

Top 3:

1. Fast
2. Light/responsive steering
3. The ride on smooth roads (motorway)

Bottom 3:

1. The rough ride on local roads (RFTs?)
2. Would have expected more features inside as standard on the 3.0 (e.g. sat nav, better hi-fi)
3. a) No parking sensors b) View from the rear window (agree with the posts above)

+

1. Engine note - scare small children flooring it in 2nd and up into 3rd
2. Styling - so different to anything else out there
3. Power - very, very few other cars cause you a problem

-

1. Colour - swore I would never buy black again. Did. Stone chips, keeping it clean a problem
2. No cruise control - I miss it so
4. Reverse parking - no PDC and poor visibility, but i survive. Never had any issues with the front!

Sapphire black M Roadster here.....

Top 3 -

1/ Power

2/ LSD

3a/ Black when it's clean

3b/ Dropping the top on a nice day :driving:

Bottom 3 -

1/ Black when it's dirty

2/ Others knowing what music I listen too in the car. LOL!

3/ Mileage.....although a drawback something I am well prepared to live with. :D

... just to prove it, here are my Bassets (facing the wrong way) in the back of the car I test drove. They are just the right size for the coupé!

+

1. Pulling / handling power short of miraculous :D
2. Deep exhaust note blaring with authority and not annoyance 8)
3. Arguably the last "proper" Sports Car (good ol' mechanical components) :driving:

1. Build quality is crap for the price you pay. I've already had too much warranty work done for frivolous issues. :x
2. Side reflectors (North American spec) stick out like a sore thumb :(
3. No option for PDC at all for North America. :(

mikedav: i'm with you on the colour. My RX-8 PZ was black and I hated it everytime I washed it, or if it hadn't been washed for a week. When they're clean, though, they look phenominal. While looking for my Z4MC, I ended up saying to myself that i'd take any colour, but I have to say i'm so glad I didn't end up with black! Shame you didn't get the cruise - really missed it in my RX-8, and am glad i've got it again now. It works great - love the 'push the stick forward to go faster, backwards to go slower' functionality. That said, I tend to drive with the mini-display showing the MPG reading, so I don't always use it when I could as I like to see how high I can get the figure when there's no fun driving opportunities (where I see how low I can get the figure  ). I've got the PDC too (am I rubbing it in? :D  ), although having come from 4-seat cars, it does seem slightly OTT to me: you just keep nudging back until your backside hits something :D Front sensors on the other hand, would be great.

Actually, Rick has just reminded me of 1 other downside: the lack of iDrive. Not because it's logical to use or anything like that, but 1. because it feels like something that's out of date on our cars by not having it, and 2. i'll admit to liking the ability to adjust everything and anything on the car, even if the system used to do it is overly complicated.

I kept looking at that photo wondering what was different about the front of your Z4M... Now I see it.

The overall wonderful look of your car means, for me at least, that the eye doesn't pay much attention to the reflector, but it's not an asset, I agree. Why is it there? US safety requirement (Jeez, Ray Charles could spot a red Z4M coming!) or just some BMW USA quirk?

Chris

Must be because of the federal regulations... :x I guess that could be easily solved with a quick change to painted reflectors, which I'm sure I'll do someday.

Top 3
1. Sleek exterior design and lines - in the right color (like Monaco blue, eh hem), it's a head turner;
2. a) Engine Purrrrr - sounds beautiful and smooth (almost makes me feel like a jungle cat driving it);
b) Sound system is terrific with iPod aux port and cd player; and
3. BMW name and cost of service (though I may be going over the top on the service).

As one poster put it, it's one of the last real sports cars in the market.

Bottom 3
1. a) Don't like the interior - too plain Jane for me... looks like X3 interior, which is also laughable;
b) No "comfortable" standard iPod integration;
2. Run Flat Tires BE GONE!!!; and
3. BMW Salespeople... obnoxious in my opinion.

If I could add a #4 to the Bottom... BMW Credit Card is HORRIBLE in terms of rewards. Stay away.

03 3.0i

Top 3:
A) The amazing grip (after ditching runflats) and handling of the car
B) 80mph in 3rd gear....nuff said
B1- The engine growl is nice, but the southern redneck in me really wants the sound of a flowmaster type exhaust on the car
C) Auto dimming mirrors

Bottom 3:
A) The fact that in 03 the sports package did not come with sport seats and the lateral support SUCKS compared to cars that are half the cost/performance/everything the Z4 is/has (a very sore note with me if you can tell)
B) The price of maintenance/upkeep/inspections if your not in warranty
C) The fact that I didn't get one with heated seats

Top 3

1. Stunning interior -Flat black look with the alloy trim + M.Seats so stylish

2. The performance

3. The whole driving experience the power noise and the feel of the cabin just a great place to be.

Bottom 3

1. Glove box if you can call it that

2. Boot lock should be behind roundell

some interesting points,

My top 3

1, the looks, inside and out, black with red lnterior and M seats
2, that exhaust note
3, the handling

my bottom 3

1, glovebox, useless thing with no light
2, the nets on the back of the seats,, whats all that about?
3, A, the lights till I upgraded them, B, the run flats till I fitted Falkens

Congrats by the way on the new car.

My top 3 are:-

1. Noise (With the foam removed from the sound generator) - awesome.
2. Handling, (still amazes me)
3. Looks, the flame surfacing is fantastic, and i see different angles every time i walk upto it.
4. Roof, the speed and the way it sucks down to seal itself. (sorry had to sneak this one in)
5. Interior, the simplicity of the dash, even though there are plenty of toys on the Z4, the buttons seem to be nice and subtle.
6. Carver stereo, miles better than the bose system i had in my TT by far !
(sorry had to sneak the last 3 in)

Bottom 3:-

1. RFT'S
2. Fuel Economy
3. Flakey 108 alloys.

Not really bad points but thats all i could come up with.

Top 3: Choice of many

Bottom 3:

1)Lack of tilting mirrors when selecting reverse! :x
2)Lack of tilting mirrors when selecting reverse! :x :x
3)Lack of tilting mirrors when selecting reverse! :x :x :x

edderby, kind of curious what you mean by "handling"? A few of us on here have done track, drag strip, and various other endeavours to satisfy the adrenaline rush, and have not found any major fault in the stock configuration other than needing a tweak to fit our personal endeavors.
